A charred smell lingered in the air. The house, which had been in decent shape moments ago, was now a complete ruin.
Lin Mo supported Joanna, at a loss for words.
Why did this scene feel so familiar?
He rubbed his nose, looked at the half-collapsed house ahead, then at Clara buried in the wreckage.
Wasn't this almost exactly what had happened to Clara in the original story?
Both times, she had taken a direct hit from laser eyes. At least Clara in the original story had still been breathing afterward. This one seemed to have gotten it worse.
Lin Mo fell silent as he stared at the charred figure in the rubble.
Was Clara just... gone?
It had all happened too fast, and his attention had been on Joanna. She had only just been injected with Original Compound V, and her body had reacted so violently that he naturally had to make sure she was all right first.
As for Clara, Lin Mo really hadn't reacted in time. He hadn't expected Joanna's laser eyes to fire straight at her.
Maeve stood nearby, utterly stunned.
She glanced up at the clouds scattered by the red beams, then at the house reduced to rubble. Clara had been standing there talking a moment ago. Now she wasn't even moving.
"She..."
Maeve opened her mouth, unsure whether to laugh or... laugh.
"Dead?"
Lin Mo didn't answer. He watched the rubble for a few seconds, then noticed something beneath the broken stones twitch ever so slightly.
No. Maybe she wasn't quite dead yet.
Lin Mo turned to Maeve and tilted his head toward the wreckage.
"Go check on her."
Maeve finally snapped out of her shock and pointed at herself.
"Me again?"
"Yeah."
Lin Mo nodded.
"Hurry and see if Clara can be saved."
