Background and History

Maeve is already a prominent sophomore when Lin Mo and Joanna arrive at Godolkin. She notices Vought staff acting afraid of the newcomers and senses danger from Lin Mo despite his harmless appearance 57 62. Vought later assigns her to address online rumors targeting the pair. Her investigation leads from student accounts and altered records to suspicious departures from the university and the involvement of its dean, Doug 74 77 81.

Maeve asks Lin Mo and Joanna for help because she doubts she can investigate someone with Doug’s influence safely on her own 81 82. She searches his office with them, finds records of experiments on children, and confronts him over the students driven out of Godolkin. When she announces her intention to arrest him, Doug threatens the grades, recommendations, and Vought evaluations on which her career depends 83 93 95.

The investigation reaches a hidden laboratory, where Maeve finds and cares for the newborn Marie Moreau 105 114. There she learns that her own powers came from Compound V, overturning her belief that they marked her as chosen for a heroic purpose 109. Maeve accepts the dose Lin Mo offers her, trusting his assurance that he can save her if something goes wrong. Because the syringe cannot penetrate her skin, she bites a wound into her arm and injects the compound through it. Vought Work and Membership in The Seven

While still a student, Maeve is assigned event schedules, interview outlines, and partner requests at Vought headquarters. She objects that she enrolled at Godolkin to train and save people, not organize paperwork, while Madelyn Stillwell presents the assignment as preparation for her future publicity responsibilities 151.

Maeve later becomes an established member of The Seven. After Translucent follows her into a restroom to spy on her, she detects him before he can see anything, drags him out, and beats him badly enough to require several days in hospital 158.

When Vought prepares to recruit another member, Maeve criticizes its habit of deciding on publicity before considering a candidate’s suitability for hero work.
