Background and History

Rin and her brother Lu Zeming lose their parents when samurai strip their village of supplies. Five-year-old Rin gathers medicinal herbs despite scratching herself, then helps treat Lu’s wounds and feed him. After she questions whether he is truly her brother, he asks if he can still be her brother and gives her a carving of their mother 1 2.

Men posing as ninja recruiters select Rin but are revealed to be child traffickers. Lu accompanies her, defeats the traffickers, and brings the children home to find their village burned. Rin asks him to teach her to fight so she can protect him too 2 3 4 5.

When Lu travels to Kusagakure, Rin stays behind to train and look after their new home. She watches the road from a mountaintop each day until he returns 9 21. Later, the death of her friend Minagawa Rei during an attack on Flower Village leaves Rin blaming herself for being unable to save her. Lu takes her on as his first cultivation student 65.

Obito and Orochimaru abduct Rin to draw Lu into a meeting. She detects their approach and briefly resists Obito’s Sharingan genjutsu, but Orochimaru’s snake venom renders her unconscious. Lu rescues her and treats both the poison and her mental injury 86 88.

Rin is caring and resourceful under hardship, gathering herbs for her injured brother even while grieving their parents.
