Ch. 161The Budget Version Returns
- Tsukimi tests his newly unlocked Shadow Realm ability, which now lets him physically travel between shadows within a sixteen-kilometer radius. He uses it to cross the Forest of Death instantly and has two Shadow Ninjas silently capture and kill two White Zetsu, preserving them as specimens for Orochimaru’s research.
- He watches Yahiko, Nagato, and Konan from a distance. They remain crushed after their ideals were challenged, but Tsukimi decides not to comfort them, believing their disillusionment may protect them from worse dangers ahead. He then scouts the forest through the Shadowkhan and learns that most teams have withdrawn to the Central Tower.
- Tsukimi avoids using his new ability in public because revealing a rare space-time technique could attract the attention of powerful enemies, especially Madara. He catches up with Kakashi’s group and tells them the Second Exam is effectively over. Obito is disappointed to lose the chance to fight, but Rin cheers him up by reminding him about the Third Exam.
- In the Central Tower, Konoha advisor Mitokado Homura confronts Cloud Hidden over its deliberate Tailed Beast Bomb attack on Tsukimi. Cloud Hidden’s representative, Brazza, argues that the matter was already settled through an apology and compensation, but cannot deny the attack was intentional. The other villages watch without intervening, hoping Konoha and Cloud Hidden will damage each other.
- Konoha learned what happened from a Sunagakure Genin, and Homura suspects Sunagakure deliberately revealed it to provoke a dispute. Konoha nevertheless feels obliged to defend Tsukimi, its promising young ninja and a member of the Nara clan. Jiraiya questions Orochimaru’s calm about his student’s apparent death; Orochimaru hints that he expects Tsukimi to have survived, despite losing the messenger snake he had given him.
- Just as the confrontation threatens to escalate, a commotion outside interrupts the hall.
Character developments and interactions: Tsukimi grows more confident in his new ability but shows caution about exposing it. He remains detached from the three young Ame ninja, while his easy exchange with Kakashi’s group highlights their trust in him. Obito quickly recovers his enthusiasm through Rin’s encouragement. In the tower, Homura takes a public stand for Tsukimi, Brazza responds defiantly, and the other village leaders quietly exploit their conflict. Orochimaru’s composure contrasts with Jiraiya’s concern and reinforces his faith in Tsukimi’s unusual capabilities.
Themes: Power brings both opportunity and risk; idealism can be dangerous in a brutal political world; and rival villages treat conflict as leverage, with loyalty to one’s people competing against self-interest.
