Background / History

Song first appears overseeing driver registration for the Dragon King Society’s newly imposed Hongsheng Cart Company. Known as the Society’s “mastermind,” he recognizes Qin Geng’s reputation and offers him the vacant South City boss’s seat. When Qin refuses, Song gives his companions a favorable twenty-percent dues rate 28 29.

Their relationship changes when Song accompanies an attempt to seize the ailing Zhu Xin’s courtyard. Qin cripples a Society hall master and kills the new South City boss; Song backs down, arranges the cleanup, and handles the police with a bribe and a cover story 44 45 46 47. Investigating Qin’s connections, Song concludes that the Society’s dealings with foreigners may bring it down. He sends Qin an urgent one-character letter, “Guan,” and offers information in exchange for his life 48 49.

Song apologizes for the courtyard attack by conceding the South City position, twenty rickshaws and their proceeds to Qin, plus one hundred silver dollars for Zhu Xin. He then remains inside the Society as Qin’s informant 50. After the Bell Mountain operation and Jiang Hailong’s death, Song survives questioning and pledges himself openly to Qin 87 90 91.

Appearance

Song is a thin, gaunt man of about forty when introduced. His sharp gaze and carefully maintained appearance contribute to his intimidating first impression 28 91.

Personality

Song is calculating and attentive to shifts in power. He investigates Qin through informants, defects when he judges the Society doomed, and quickly adapts his manner after seeing Qin’s strength 46 48 49. His caution can become fear: he worries for his own survival during Qin’s fight with the Water Corpses and hides in a tree throughout the battle at Bell Mountain 78 85 87.

He is also an effective organizer. Under Qin, he turns changes of leadership into public events, keeps detailed accounts, and anticipates the political work needed to establish Qin’s position on the Xun River 93 100 121.
