Aaron stood below the platform, carefully studying the Half-Orc in the dueling ring with disbelief on his face. Returning from the dead was actually fairly common in the Realms, but most resurrection spells had to be cast on the spot. The weakest, third-level Revivify, had to be cast within one minute of death and could not heal fatal wounds, making it an extremely restrictive resurrection spell.
Fifth-level Resurrection of the Dead required the subject to have been dead for no more than ten days. It could heal fatal wounds but could not restore limbs or organs. If a vital body part or organ was missing, the resurrection would fail, and it could not dispel magic or curses.
Seventh-level Raise Dead required a corpse as an anchor, and the subject could not have been dead for more than a hundred years. It could restore the entire body, neutralize all poisons, and lift all curses.
Ninth-level True Resurrection did not even require a corpse. Knowing the person was enough.
(Also, resurrection was extremely painful for the deceased. They needed a lengthy rest to readjust to the feeling of returning to the mortal world.)
