In May of 1364 Dalereckoning, the Sea of Swords was calm, and the voyage went smoothly. The large sailing ship carrying Aaron and his companions sailed offshore from the Sword Coast. A day later, the vast expanse of the Endless Sea unfolded before him.

Many small islands lay west of the Sword Coast. Closer to Baldur's Gate were the ancient ancestral homes of the Illuskans-the Whalebones and Ruathym-as well as the Moonshae Isles, whose resources they now shared with the Ffolk and an elven branch known as the Llewyrr.

The Moonshae Isles were a rather wondrous place. Gods frequently appeared there, including Bhaal, the Lord of Murder, Silvanus, the Father of Oaks, Chauntea, the Earth Mother, Malar, the Beastlord, and Talos, the Lord of Storms, all of whom often manifested avatars there.

The Llewyrr elves-a subrace somewhere between Sun Elves and Wood Elves-lived on the Moonshae Isles. Rumor had it that they were a branch of the High Elves who had tried to retreat to Evermeet to escape the turmoil after the Crown Wars, only to suffer a shipwreck and be forced to remain in the Moonshae Isles.

Not far away lay Mintarn's Freeport, which also served as neutral ground where opposing sides could meet and as a recruiting center where sailors could find all sorts of jobs. The small island of Orlumbor, with its treacherous harbor and specialized ships in high demand, was also an independent and influential nation.

The voyage had begun smoothly. With Reinsdorf's wealth and the Bald Singer Morgan's unusual recruitment techniques, Aaron had quickly purchased a large oceangoing merchant ship from the Seven Suns Trading Coster for their immediate use.
