Aaron had originally wanted Barrel among his traveling companions as well. As a legendary mage trained on Evermeet, that fat bastard might play a crucial role in this journey into the Abyss.
But Barrel politely declined the trip to the Abyss. First, it was too dangerous. Second, he had been trying to lose weight lately.
A mage aspiring to become Myth Drannor's chief armsmaster was strange enough in itself, and for a fat fellow like Barrel to win the War Sword's recognition would be harder still.
He had only one chance. If he failed to earn the War Sword's recognition on his first attempt, it would cut him to pieces.
That was why the Sun Elf mage still did not dare touch the wooden case.
His efforts had not been in vain, however. Following his report, someone came from Evermeet.
The visitor was a stunning Sun Elf beauty with lovely eyes and graceful movements. Wearing a thin veil, he offered to read Barrel's face as soon as they met.
"Looking at my face, do you think I can become Myth Drannor's chief armsmaster?" Barrel roared excitedly upon seeing the visitor.
"Tsk, tsk, tsk. With those looks and that charisma, I'd say you haven't a chance." The visitor sounded faintly rueful. "But... if you're willing to accept my guidance, there might still be some hope."
"I'm willing!" Barrel could hardly wait. "I'm willing to accept your guidance!"
"The latest trend in Arvandor is that 'I'm willing' doesn't mean 'I consent,' Barrel." After that lukewarm joke, the visitor took Barrel away. "Come with me."
Before leaving, the visitor also gave Aaron a long, meaningful look.
Only afterward did Aaron learn that the visitor was none other than Corellon: father god of the elves, God-King of the Cindarella pantheon, and a racial deity
