The way Imoen and the others dealt with the Red Dragon deserved a mention.
As a Chaos Sorcerer, Aaron had always relied on brute force in his spellcasting, overpowering enemies through sheer spell strength. A Sorcerer's limited spell list also left him little room to devise elaborate spell combinations.
But Imoen and the others naturally had nowhere near Aaron's magical power, so defeating the Red Dragon required some finesse.
First came memorizing the boss's moves-in other words, Imoen and the others had to remember exactly what this Red Dragon could do.
That was simple enough. Ultimately, Dragons only had a handful of routines. A Red Dragon's usual fighting pattern was Dispel Magic, wing attacks, charging, and scouring the ground with dragon breath.
That pattern was fixed. Beyond that, Dragons had an innate aura of fear and a few spells. This particular Red Dragon, for instance, favored Poison Curse, Haste, and Stoneskin, and liked using Prismatic Spray and Wall of Fire at close range.
Having thoroughly enjoyed watching the cricket fights, the Red Dragon did not regard Imoen and the others as enemies, allowing them to launch a surprise attack.
Imoen's tactic was therefore to first cast Lower Resistance to reduce the Red Dragon's resistance, then cast Poison Curse, supported by Jaheira's Druid spells, Bane and Confusion. Together, the four spells effectively slashed the Red Dragon's resistance.
Normally, the next step would be to gamble on an instant-death spell, hoping to kill the Red Dragon in one shot.
