Background
Yao Shi and her older brother, Yao Qing, were pursued by assassins before Wu Xingsheng spared their lives. He bound the siblings to a three-year wager: they could earn freedom by injuring or killing him, but would otherwise remain at his side. During their first attempt, Yao Shi stabbed Wu Xingsheng in the abdomen, proving more dangerous in direct violence than Yao Qing expected. 123 124 178
After the siblings failed to defeat Wu Xingsheng, Yao Shi eventually sided with him against Yao Qing. With Wu Xingsheng's and his father's consent, she later became Wu Liang's personal maid. The role served both as repayment for being saved and adopted and as a way to discipline her own violent instincts by enduring the difficult work of caring for Wu Liang. 124 178
By the start of the story, Yao Shi holds authority within the Wu Family second only to Wu Liang, including the ability to mobilize personnel and substantial funds. She uses those connections to bring doctor Li Hua to Yanghai City for He Jingao's surgery. 11 12
Appearance
Yao Shi is a striking young woman with long black hair, dark eyes, pale skin, and an outwardly cold, composed bearing. Her usual European-style maid uniform reinforces her formal image, though she also wears professional, casual, and Huihuangxing Academy clothing. 1 5 88 300
- Usually wears her black hair in a high ponytail, often secured with a white ribbon or hair tie. 1 11 329
- Keeps a silver hairpin on her person regardless of outfit; it can also be used as a weapon. 11 21 261
- Is nearly as tall as Wu Liang when wearing high heels. 5
- Her eyes can take on an unnerving, predatory intensity when she is angry or protective. 28 49 449
Personality
Yao Shi normally presents herself as an impeccably calm, meticulous, and aloof maid. She is highly disciplined, speaks formally, and tends to reduce her interactions with others to work-related matters. Her composed demeanor is not effortless: according to Yao Qing, it is a deliberate restraint placed over her original violent, possessive nature. 84 178
Her original state is not a separate personality but her repressed instinctive self: fierce, bloodthirsty, and especially volatile when Wu Liang is involved. She can become jealous, controlling, or dangerously aggressive toward those she believes threaten or insult him. 177 178
Despite her emotional reserve, Yao Shi gradually develops warmth, insecurity, and a desire for ordinary happiness. Her exhaustion-induced self-forgetting amnesia reveals a carefree, affectionate version of herself that longs for friendship, school life, and freedom from responsibility. After recovering, she becomes more expressive while retaining her usual composure. 322 325 336 455
