The desperate wails echoing through the streets of New York still had not faded, yet Kamar-Taj, thousands of miles away, had already erupted into chaos.
The usually tranquil Sanctum was now boiling like a pot of water.
Golden light flashed wildly across the sky, and countless Portals tore open from thin air like bamboo shoots after the rain.
All the apprentices training outside had been forcibly sent indoors and ordered to stay behind closed doors. The plaza was packed with hurriedly moving, fully armed battle Sorcerers.
Raine alone was the exception.
He stood calmly in the center of the ancient main hall, taking part in a meeting of the upper echelons.
The people seated around him were all core Masters.
No one found Raine's appearance strange. They had long since accepted him as one of their own.
"Mordo, have you lost your mind? How dare you use the emergency summons so casually!"
The Master who spoke had a sinister expression, and dark-red, foul-smelling Demon blood still dripped from his black trench coat.
He was Reinhardt, the Master who had just taken office after Kaecilius's defection. He had spent years leading teams in battles across other dimensions.
The emergency summons was an ironclad rule established by the Sorcerer Supreme.
When she was away, it could only be activated with the joint signatures of at least three Masters.
Once activated, everyone except the guardians of the Three Sanctums had to immediately return to defend Kamar-Taj.
The situation had to be extremely urgent.
Reinhardt had just returned from outer space after fighting his way back. Completely in the dark, he flew into a rage on the spot.
Mordo took a deep breath and suppressed the fury in his heart before sweeping his hand sharply through the air.
A dazzling Magic Screen suddenly unfolded in the center of the hall.
"See for yourselves. New York is about to be overrun. That's why I pressed the alarm."
The instant they saw the images clearly, several Masters simultaneously sucked in a cold breath.
"Chitauri?!"
"A bunch of cosmic locusts dare run wild on Earth!"
"When the Sorcerer Supreme returns, she'll skin them alive!"
Rage instantly ignited throughout the hall.
The Sorcerers traveled through the Multiverse year-round. They knew all too well what kind of creatures the Chitauri army were.
Mordo swept his gaze across the room, his voice cold enough to freeze blood. "Do you understand the situation now? Effective immediately, all of Kamar-Taj is to enter Level One combat readiness!"
"Agreed!"
"Agreed!"
The motion passed unanimously.
Mordo issued the order in a sharp voice. "Everyone will pass through the New York Sanctum in groups and enter the battlefield. Open the Mirror Dimension directly! Drag the battlefield into our territory. Pin these alien vermin to Earth!"
Several Masters wore grim expressions as they turned and strode out of the hall.
Mordo stopped and fixed his eyes on Raine. "You're coming too. It's time you saw some blood. Kamar-Taj does not raise hothouse flowers."
"Understood!"
Raine nodded decisively and hurried after him.
Outside the main hall.
Tens of thousands of battle Sorcerers had already finished forming ranks in the open ground.
Each veteran led ten apprentices, and each Master commanded ten veterans. More than a hundred formations radiated murderous intent.
This was the fortune The Ancient One had painstakingly built up over countless years.
The elite forces stationed in other dimensions had all been assembled today.
There were more than a hundred Masters alone.
Dozens of high-ranking Sorcerers joined forces to cast a spell.
Boom!
A gigantic golden Portal, dozens of meters tall, rose violently from the ground.
"Forward, all forces! Defend Earth to the death!"
Mordo raised his arm and shouted.
A golden flood surged forward with a thunderous roar.
The Sorcerers crossed through the gate, traveled via the New York Sanctum, and charged straight into the battlefield.
The Sorcerers had one rule: they never smashed things in the real world.
On the New York battlefield, no one noticed the arrival of this surprise force.
The Avengers below only saw a strange scene:
The Chitauri flying troops streaking chaotically through the sky would suddenly vanish into thin air as they flew.
Even the enormous Leviathans plunged headfirst into empty air and never emerged again.
Magic concealed reality.
High in the air, countless invisible Portals opened wide. Before the swarming alien army could even reach the buildings, they were forcibly dragged into another plane.
The Avengers on the ground felt the pressure ease sharply.
But before they could catch their breath, far too many freaks poured out of the Portals. The stragglers still bore down on them until they could barely breathe.
The view shifted back to the Mirror Dimension.
Ten thousand Sorcerers formed a grand array. Blinding golden Magic Shields linked together, illuminating the dim space until it shone.
A Sorcerer's individual combat power was extremely formidable.
The Chitauri energy rifles merely smoked when they struck the Magic Shields. They could not break through the defenses at all.
Any random apprentice pulled from the ranks could beat several alien foot soldiers senseless.
But the enemy's numbers were enough to make one's scalp tingle.
Kamar-Taj's forces numbered more than ten thousand, enough to steamroll any nation on Earth.
But their opponents were a space fleet numbering at least several hundred thousand! Densely packed aircraft blotted out the sky, stretching beyond sight.
Fortunately, they had the home-field advantage.
The Masters frantically folded space, forcibly slicing apart the alien formations. Waves of destructive Magic rained down in a barrage, barely holding the line.
Even so, casualties were unavoidable.
"Call the Medical Team! Someone on the left wing is seriously wounded!"
"My Magic is almost depleted! The Mirror Dimension won't hold!"
"The third defense line is requesting fire support!"
In the command center at the rear, several Masters responsible for coordinating the battle were sweating profusely with anxiety.
"Damn these alien dogs! Where did they get so many War Machines?" Hamir cursed loudly.
His combat ability was relatively weak, and he was usually considered a mediocre Sorcerer. Since everyone had been mobilized this time, he was mainly handling medical care and logistics.
Wong's face was as heavy as water as he calmly analyzed the situation. "The Chitauri have trampled countless star systems. Using resources seized through plunder to create biological weapons is as easy for them as drinking water."
"Damn it!" Hamir anxiously slapped his thigh.
Wong issued orders methodically. "Activate the second plan. Send in the reserve forces. Pull the front-line troops back to take potions and recover. Hamir, don't just stand there. What about the Hundred-Person Joint Forbidden Spell your academic faction developed? Hurry up and bring it out to clear the field!"
One military order after another was relayed down the chain like flowing water.
Hamir gritted his teeth and went to make the arrangements.
Wong stared fixedly at the casualty figures on the Light Screen, his expression dark.
He knew all too well that if they continued fighting this war of attrition, Kamar-Taj would pay a devastating price today.
