Ch. 161In Konoha: Three choices at the start
Key plot points and events
- Liuyun traps Obito in a personalized genjutsu modeled on the Mangekyō Sharingan. Inside it, Obito endures three days of psychological torment: a grotesquely muscular version of Rin repeatedly accuses and stabs him. Only an instant passes in the outside world.
- Obito survives the illusion, but Liuyun freezes and severs both his legs, calling it compensation for Minato and Kushina’s deaths. He leaves the unconscious Obito in the woods, expecting White Zetsu to find and rescue him.
- News of the Nine-Tails’ rampage and Konoha’s losses reaches the other villages. Their leaders consider exploiting Konoha’s weakness but fear Liuyun’s overwhelming power.
- With Minato dead, Hiruzen returns as Hokage after Jiraiya refuses the position. Konoha’s leadership excludes the Uchiha from consideration, partly because the Nine-Tails was seen with Sharingan eyes.
- Hiruzen explains Konoha’s situation to the villagers, who reluctantly accept his return. The other villages focus instead on rebuilding their economies.
- Uchiha Fugaku, pressed by his clan’s anger, confronts Hiruzen and demands to know why no Uchiha was considered for Hokage.
Character developments and interactions
- Obito is shown as emotionally vulnerable beneath his rage: the false Rin still affects him deeply, even though he knows she is an illusion. He endures the torture and threatens revenge, but ultimately collapses from the combined trauma.
- Liuyun remains calm and sadistic, using his control of the genjutsu to punish Obito and then physically maim him. He is confident Obito will survive and be rescued.
- Hiruzen accepts the burden of restoring order but struggles to find a successor. He considers Jiraiya, who refuses, and briefly raises other possibilities.
- Fugaku moves from resentment to direct confrontation, voicing the Uchiha clan’s sense of exclusion.
- Jiraiya grieves for Konoha but refuses the Hokage role, unwilling to be tied down by the office.
- The other village leaders acknowledge Liuyun as a force capable of deterring even a weakened Konoha’s enemies.
Significant themes
- Power and political deterrence: Liuyun’s strength restrains the other villages and shapes Konoha’s political choices.
- Trauma and vengeance: Obito’s attachment to Rin makes the genjutsu especially cruel, while his suffering deepens his hatred of Liuyun.
- Distrust and exclusion: The Uchiha are blamed or suspected after the Nine-Tails attack and are denied a chance at leadership.
- Konoha’s decline: The village’s losses leave it without an obvious successor and force Hiruzen back into office.
