Background and History

Madara pursued the Eye of the Moon Plan, which required collecting the Tailed Beasts and reviving the Ten-Tails to create a dream world. In old age, he depended on the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path for life support. After an earlier plan failed, he recruited Uchiha Setsuna, taught her forbidden Uchiha and Six Paths techniques, and instructed her to recover his eyes from Nagato. He then disconnected himself from the statue and died, leaving Setsuna to act under his name until his expected revival 47 87 91.

After his resurrection, Madara resumed the plan and took an interest in Obito, whom he saw as a promising Uchiha with a stated desire for peace. Their first meeting led to a prolonged duel and mutual respect. Madara made Obito his adopted grandson, gave him the Gunbai and scythe, and accepted his proposal to delay the Tailed Beast operation 156 158 163 165 166 167 168.

Their bond survived disagreements over Madara’s plan. Obito questioned the stone tablet on which Madara based his faith in Infinite Tsukuyomi, then admitted he had prepared to revive Hashirama, Tobirama, Izuna, and Madara’s father as a contingency against him. When both tried to become the Ten-Tails’ jinchūriki, Obito took the larger share of its chakra. He subsequently showed Madara a vision of the future in which Black Zetsu had manipulated them; Madara later told Hashirama that Black Zetsu had deceived him and proposed that they join forces against the Ōtsutsuki threat 178 227 237 239 274.

Appearance

Madara has long black hair and a commanding presence. After absorbing part of the Ten-Tails, his hair turns white and falls to his waist 158 163 238.

Personality

Madara is proud, competitive, and exhilarated by strong opponents. He initially treats Obito’s challenge as a lesson for a junior, but becomes delighted when Obito genuinely threatens him. His confidence also fuels his ambition to develop stronger ocular powers and new techniques 165 166 272 297.

He is unexpectedly affectionate toward Obito. Although adopting him also serves the Eye of the Moon Plan, Madara privately acknowledges that he likes Obito and does not want to face the future alone. His protectiveness can make him quick to act: when Obito’s Kāma transformation makes him appear possessed by Isshiki, Madara attacks before checking whether Obito is still himself 168 206 219 263 264.
