Background / History

Shikaba is a highly intelligent but socially isolated member of the Nara Clan. He lacks the usual companions associated with his clan’s traditional three-person group because the Yamanaka and Akimichi families did not have children his age. After failing to befriend Kakashi, he became interested in Obito when Obito’s sudden academic improvement suggested that he had changed. 14

He is sharp-tongued and quick to notice social weaknesses. During Kisuke’s announcement of the exam results, Shikaba jokes that the teacher probably cannot control his own paycheck, prompting the class to gossip about Kisuke’s relationship with his wife. 14 He later joins Obito and Rin for a barbecue, offers to pay for the meal, and helps include Ayako after the group realizes they had forgotten she was with them. 20

Although Shikaba is academically gifted, he is reluctant to become a ninja and tells his friends that the profession is too troublesome. At graduation, he even asks the Third Hokage whether he can choose not to become one, but receives a firm refusal. 21 24
