Ch. 701A Mature Pokémon
Plot points and events
- Dian wakes from a cold sweat and sore throat, grumbling about his bad luck in Unova and the pressure to maintain a dignified image as the likely next chief Pokémon Ranger.
- He reflects on the many allies and resources supporting his ambitions: political connections, Kingdoms, researchers, interest groups, family networks, financial backers, the Ranger Union, and public goodwill. He sees these forces as the foundation for becoming an Elite and Champion.
- Once alone, Dian luxuriates in the prospect of a comfortable life—until Lisa appears and catches him asking for servants. He quickly shifts to ingratiating himself with her, mindful that she is responsible for his injections.
- Days later, Dian visits the frozen forest left by Kyurem’s Frozen World attack. Ice-type Pokémon are drawn toward its center, while other Pokémon avoid the area. Dian is supposed to investigate the lingering influence, though he also wants a chance to clear his head.
- While exploring with Alolan Vulpix, Dian decides to train it to handle domestic chores, inspired by Chinami’s self-sufficient Arcanine. Vulpix instead shows off by freezing and shattering a stick, apparently expecting praise.
- Dian concludes that Vulpix is the best candidate to become his ideal “mature” Pokémon: cute and affectionate, but also able to cook, clean, do laundry, and make him comfortable. Vulpix senses something ominous in his enthusiasm.
Character developments
- Dian is ambitious and politically calculating, but also lazy, self-indulgent, and comically concerned with preserving his public image. He imagines raising a helpful Pokémon so he can avoid work.
- Alolan Vulpix is playful, affectionate, and eager for praise. It does not understand Dian’s plans for its future.
- Lisa is established as someone Dian is careful not to offend, particularly because she gives him injections.
- Dian’s thoughts also reveal his views of his other Pokémon: Misdreavus is too crafty, Ralts avoids work through cuteness, Mawile is diligent but limited, and Litwick is a poor cook.
Significant themes
- Power and influence: Dian sees his varied alliances and public support as a practical route to political advancement.
- Public image versus private behavior: He restrains his anger in public, then curses and lounges in private.
- Comedic role reversal: Dian wants a Pokémon that can serve him, while Vulpix’s antics suggest it may not fit the role he imagines.
- Pokémon companionship and care: Dian’s affection is genuine, but mixed with self-serving plans to shape Vulpix into a convenient helper.
Character interactions
- Dian privately vents, then reacts nervously when a staff member might overhear him.
- Lisa catches Dian indulging in fantasies about servants, and he immediately tries to charm her.
- Vulpix tugs Dian forward, listens to his lecture, then rejects the branch he offers and freezes it instead. Dian praises it and strokes its head, while privately planning its future as his all-purpose domestic companion.
