Ch. 41Pokémon Hunters
Key plot points and events
- On his way from Oreburgh City to Hearthome, Bai Shi searches for a new Pokémon but finds no suitable candidates.
- He discovers three Pokémon Hunters attacking a Tauros, part of a plan to capture its herd for Lady J.
- When one hunter threatens him, Bai Shi charges him with his bicycle and knocks him unconscious. He then battles the others with Staravia and Stantler, while Dunsparce ambushes them from underground.
- Bai Shi defeats the remaining hunters and their Pokémon, restrains them, takes some money and useful equipment, destroys their communication devices, and plans to turn them over to Officer Jenny.
- He revives the Tauros, wins its trust, and considers catching it. Before he can decide, its herd arrives, and Tauros returns to them.
- Lady J learns that the squad has gone missing and simply cancels the commission, showing little concern for them.
Character development and interactions
- Bai Shi is resourceful and fiercely self-reliant: he anticipates danger, uses a surprise attack, and coordinates his Pokémon effectively. His bold bicycle charge also shows his willingness to improvise under pressure.
- He treats the rescued Tauros with care, but ultimately respects its reunion with the herd rather than trying to capture it.
- His Pokémon work together to protect him: Staravia and Stantler handle the direct battle, while Dunsparce’s ambush turns the fight.
- The hunters’ threats and confidence collapse once Bai Shi gains the upper hand. Ueno invokes Lady J’s name, but Bai Shi ignores him and has Stantler put him to sleep.
- Lady J’s brief response establishes her as cold and pragmatic; she values profitable work, not the people carrying it out.
Significant themes
- Resourcefulness and self-preservation: Bai Shi survives by planning ahead and exploiting surprise.
- Freedom and loyalty: Tauros chooses to return to its herd, and Bai Shi lets it go.
- Contrast between compassion and exploitation: Bai Shi protects Pokémon, while the hunters treat them as targets for profit.
- Pragmatic power: Lady J’s indifference suggests that her organization sees its members as expendable.
