Near-divine combat power 50 Detonates his ninth, hundred-thousand-year ring. With all nine rings spent, gains enough power to tear open space and enter the void, but cannot escape Lin Feng’s space-time attack.

Background / History

Tang Chen trained for over a century to become a Peerless Douluo. Unlike Qian Daoliu and Bo Saixi, he was not a Divine Servant and received no deity’s blessing. He created the Clear Sky Nine Absolutes and Great Sumeru Hammer, raising the Clear Sky Sect from a medium-to-upper-tier sect to the strongest sect on Douluo Continent 42 49 51.

His longstanding rivalry with Qian Daoliu included hundreds of battles, with victories and defeats on both sides. Neither could decisively establish superiority overall, and the Soul Master World honored them as the Two Peaks. Tang Chen nevertheless held the advantage on land 27 49.

By his first appearance, Tang Chen served as First Elder while his son, Tang Zhen, held the position of sect master. He feared that Spirit Hall’s exceptionally gifted successors, Lin Feng and Bibi Dong, would eventually overshadow his grandsons, Tang Xiao and Tang Hao 7.

Appearance

Tang Chen appears middle-aged despite his long cultivation history 48 49.

  • Clothing: Black robes 48.
  • Face: Well-defined features and sharp eyebrows slanting toward his temples 48.
  • Hair: Loose, thick black hair compared to a lion’s mane 48.
  • Martial Soul: An outwardly unremarkable Clear Sky Hammer whose simplicity conveys mastery rather than spectacle 49.

Personality

Tang Chen places bloodline loyalty above outside talent. After Spirit Hall loses Lin Feng and Bibi Dong, he forbids the Clear Sky Sect from spending resources on outsiders and threatens to cripple members who accept outside disciples, especially women. His concern for his grandsons is genuine, but he also treats Ah Yin as someone who can be abducted and awarded to them for satisfactory training 7 21.

Proud and eager for worthy opponents, he welcomes his defeat by Bo Saixi as an exciting discovery rather than a humiliation. His delight contrasts sharply with Qian Daoliu’s distress over the expedition’s losses 28.

Bo Saixi’s rejection exposes his possessiveness. He insists that they love each other and blames Lin Feng for her refusal, threatening Ah Yin to make Lin Feng suffer the same unhappiness. In combat, however, he can suppress his anger, analyze an opponent’s techniques, and adapt. After his final defeat, he neither begs nor curses, instead acknowledging his loss and asking how Lin Feng became so powerful 48 49 50.

Abilities & Skills

Clear Sky Hammer Mastery

  • Wields the hammer with enough speed and precision to block successive attacks involving vines, flames, earth spikes, feathers, and Dark Water 49 50.
  • Specializes in close-range fighting; Lin Feng exploits this by maintaining distance and refusing to trade blows on Tang Chen’s terms 50.

Clear Sky Nine Absolutes

Tang Chen’s self-created hammer techniques are his preferred alternative to conventional Soul Skills 49.

  • Nine principles: Seal, contain, pierce, penetrate, bind, shake, shatter, sever, and collapse 50.
  • Each move is described as no weaker than a ten-thousand-year Soul Skill 49.
  • Offers versatile responses to different opponents, but lacks the explosive force needed to break Lin Feng’s domain without Ring Detonation 49.
  • Tang Chen requires his grandsons to master at least three Absolutes before leaving seclusion 21.

Great Sumeru Hammer — Ring Detonation

  • A self-created technique that releases Soul Ring power into his hammer and body 49 51.
  • Six detonations provide enough force to shatter the Demon Whale Sea Suppression Domain 49.
  • Detonating all nine rings raises his power close to the divine level and allows him to tear a passage into the void 50.
  • Requires precise control: mental paralysis causes the accumulated energy to run wild inside him. Spending all nine rings ultimately leaves him exhausted and defenseless 50.

Soul Power Control and Durability

  • Expels residual Dark Water from Tang Xiao and Tang Hao’s bodies with little effort 21.
  • Withstands Lin Feng’s opening punch and kick without serious injury 49.
  • Resists the chilling effects of Lin Feng’s domain by holding its Dark Water at bay with Soul Power 49.
  • Survives the internal backlash of eight detonated rings, though it causes severe pain and interrupts his offensive 50.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Clear Sky Hammer — His manifested Martial Soul and principal weapon 49.
  • Full set of six Soul Bones — Includes a Head Soul Bone. Lin Feng retrieves all six after Tang Chen’s death and reserves them for Ah Yin to inspect rather than absorbing them himself 50 51.
  • Letter to Bo Saixi — A declaration of affection delivered by Tang Xiao and Tang Hao; its rejection helps trigger his final confrontation with Lin Feng 42 43 48.

Relationships

  • Tang Zhen — Son and current Clear Sky Sect master. Obeys Tang Chen’s orders to punish Lin Feng and bring Ah Yin back to the sect 7 21.
  • Tang Xiao and Tang Hao — Grandsons and the Clear Sky Twin Stars. Tang Chen treats their injuries, disciplines them, and retaliates on their behalf. Their report about Bo Saixi’s rejection directs his anger toward Lin Feng 21 43.
  • Qian Daoliu — Longstanding rival and fellow member of the Two Peaks. They temporarily cooperate against Sea God Island, though Tang Chen’s delight in finding Bo Saixi irritates Qian Daoliu after their defeat 27 28.
  • Bo Saixi — Powerful opponent and unreciprocated romantic interest. She defeats him at sea and later rejects his declaration of love 28 42.
  • Lin Feng — Enemy and eventual killer. Tang Chen first orders punishment through others, then confronts him personally after blaming him for Bo Saixi’s rejection 21 27 48 50.
  • Ah Yin — Target of his abduction orders and threats. His threat to subject her to his grandsons turns Lin Feng’s reluctance to fight into an intention to kill him 21 48.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Spirit Hall’s Scandal and Sect Retaliation

Tang Chen celebrates Spirit Hall’s loss of its two young geniuses as an opportunity for the Clear Sky Sect. He uses the scandal to reinforce his policy of excluding outsiders from the sect’s resources and discipleship 7.

When Lin Feng defeats Tang Xiao and Tang Hao, Tang Chen orders the brothers into seclusion and sends Tang Zhen to punish Lin Feng without killing him. He also demands Ah Yin’s capture. Lin Feng defeats the dispatched group, leaving Tang Zhen to flee; the combined threat of the Clear Sky Sect and Spirit Hall prompts Lin Feng and Ah Yin to sail overseas 21 26.

Sea God Island and Failed Courtship

Tang Chen confronts Qian Daoliu over the deaths of Clear Sky Sect elders, initially hoping to make Spirit Hall handle Lin Feng. He accepts an invitation to attack Sea God Island because it may offer a worthy opponent 27.

Bo Saixi overwhelms both men using the sea’s power. Tang Chen leaves delighted and intends to challenge her again, but also develops romantic feelings for her. He later sends his grandsons with a love letter. Bo Saixi rejects the proposal, and the brothers return blaming Lin Feng for turning her against their grandfather 28 42 43.

Final Duel in Xilu City

Tang Chen interrupts Lin Feng and Ah Yin’s celebration, accuses Lin Feng of ruining his romance, and threatens to abduct Ah Yin. Lin Feng orders a civilian evacuation before attacking him 48.

During the duel, Tang Chen breaks Lin Feng’s domain and blocks his elemental attacks, but cannot overcome his ranged pressure. Mental Paralysis Ray disrupts his eight-ring detonation boost. He detonates his final ring to flee into the void, only for Great Five-Element Destruction Divine Light to pursue him and erase his right arm and half his shoulder 49 50.

With his power exhausted, Tang Chen admits defeat. Lin Feng answers his final question about rapid cultivation with “the power of love,” then kills him with Platinum Army Breaker 50.

Aftermath

  • Tang Chen’s death removes the Clear Sky Sect’s principal protector. Tang Zhen sends the younger generation away with the sect’s accumulated resources, leaving older members at its headquarters 51.
  • Tang Xiao and Tang Hao continue seeking strength to avenge their grandfather and restore the sect’s prestige 57 58.
  • The Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect sees an opportunity to rise, while Yu Yuanzhen orders the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan to keep a low profile rather than provoke Lin Feng 53.
