Gavin had just returned to the dormitory when his gaze skimmed the edge of an old, yellowed piece of parchment.
It was rare to see Rolf sitting at his desk. Deep down, he was like his grandfather—not the sort to sit quietly with a book.
At last, Rolf stirred from his daze. He uncapped the ink bottle and picked up his quill.
With a flick of his wrist, he neatly struck out the "1" before Cordelia's name and wrote a careful "2" beside it.
The names below each moved down a place.
Justin had been packing his bag for tomorrow at the foot of his bed. Hearing Rolf's quill scratch, he stopped and came over.
When he saw the list, he could hardly believe it.
"Miss Rowle has fallen from the top?"
Rolf said nothing.
He merely smoothed the empty half-inch at the top of the parchment with his finger, dipped his quill in ink, and wrote a new line with utmost care:
[1. Luna Lovegood.]
The fresh ink still gleamed wetly.
Justin could not wait. He reached over and spun the parchment a full hundred and eighty degrees to face him.
He stared at the startling new name at the top, scarcely believing his eyes.
"Lovegood? That Loony girl?"
"I left her off before."
Rolf calmly reached out, turned the parchment back toward himself, and lowered his head to keep changing the numbers.
Justin's eyes widened. He looked at the name in first place, then back at Rolf.
"Isn't she a second-year?"
