The next day was Wednesday.
As usual at Hogwarts, classes began on the first day of term.
Gavin had Herbology with Gryffindor in the morning and Transfiguration with Slytherin in the afternoon.
For some students, there would be no sleeping in that Wednesday morning—
Anyone who had failed a subject at the end of last term had a resit that day, held in the professors' offices or classrooms.
Gavin was among them, though his situation was a little different.
He had not taken the final exams at all.
While practising how to control the Philosopher's Stone, he had missed every single exam.
Under school rules, missing that many exams meant his final results were void.
Void results meant repeating the year, just like Marcus of Slytherin.
But Dumbledore had asked several professors for their opinions and finally decided to give him a chance—
He could sit the resits alongside the students who had failed. If he passed, he would move up to second year as normal.
If he failed, he would repeat the year.
Cordelia was in the same position and had to resit every subject too.
As Gavin ate breakfast in the Great Hall, Ernie and Justin sat on either side of him. One piled toast onto his plate while the other poured Pumpkin Juice into his cup. They looked as though they were seeing a soldier off to war.
"What time did you get back last night?" Ernie asked with a yawn. He had got up early too, woken by his two roommates. "I was asleep, but I didn't even hear you come in."
"Pretty late." Gavin bit into his toast. "I didn't want to wake you, so I borrowed a book and read it in an Empty Classroom."
"What?" Justin stared at him, his voice rising despite
