Trelawney glared at Will, then leaned over Harry and Ron, who were laughing. "An eagle... my dear, you have a sworn enemy. A skull... danger lies in your path... oh my... oh my!"

"My dear," Professor Trelawney said, her enormous eyes flying wide open, "you have the Grim."

"What?" Harry asked.

He could tell he was not the only one who did not understand.

Dean Thomas shrugged at him, and Lavender Brown looked bewildered, but almost everyone else covered their mouths in horror.

"The Grim, my dear, the Grim!" Professor Trelawney cried. She seemed utterly shocked that Harry had not understood. "That great, sinister dog that haunts graveyards! My dear boy, it is an omen—the worst of omens—an omen of death!"

Everyone was startled. Harry thought of the great black dog he had seen in Diagon Alley—he had even met its gaze. Was that an omen of death?

Whatever the case, he felt a little uneasy, especially with his classmates all giving him strange looks.

Will held back Hermione, who was about to argue with Trelawney, and whispered, "That will only turn the blindly faithful against you."

A few minutes later, Divination ended, and everyone crowded down the stairs. Quite a few students kept glancing at Harry, as though he might meet with disaster and die at any moment. Harry felt uncomfortable all over.

"Relax, Harry." Will seemed perfectly at ease. "Trelawney isn't necessarily right."

Ron's voice was grave. "This is different, Will. Black dogs really are bad omens. My uncle Bilius saw one, and then—then he died twenty-four hours later! And she said you were in danger of dying too!"

"Harry," Ron said, turning to him, "you haven't seen a great black dog anywhere, have you?"

"I have," Harry said. "During the summer holidays, in Diagon Alley, on the
