The buoyant joy in his memories seemed to become more tangible at that moment. It was as though a weightless balloon were inflating in Will's chest, and as he walked toward the sofa, he felt as if a layer of cotton cushioned his feet. The relief of his stress melting away and the satisfaction of gaining experience seemed to take on physical form.
Will tried raising his wand. "Expecto Patronum—"
A cloud of silver mist streamed from the tip of his wand, but failed to gather into anything substantial. It was no more than a warm breath Will might exhale on a winter night.
Will put away his wand and stopped expending magic. The joy in his chest gradually settled down. He had already anticipated this result.
After all, the Patronus Charm required the caster to focus their mental energy intensely and clearly recall their "happiest, most powerful emotional memory." Only a sufficiently powerful happy memory could summon a corporeal Patronus with a complete animal form.
