The British Aurors' humiliating defeat never became a topic of conversation in England's Wizarding World.
The reason was simple: word never got out. A few days later, some newspapers reported a massive landslide in the Scottish Highlands that had nearly buried an entire valley.
Only a handful of people knew that the Aurors had been knocked out and that someone had stuffed gold into the Auror Office director's pocket. None of them publicized it. There was nothing glorious about it.
For a long time afterward, Scrimgeour's face still burned whenever he thought about it. The man had actually dared to stuff gold into his pocket.
The Aurors also stopped investigating the mysterious wizard. For one thing, they might not be able to beat him. For another, he had not dealt a fatal blow to any of them, which suggested he was not truly a crazed Dark Wizard.
As for why the wizard had filled in the valley after they lost consciousness, Scrimgeour believed he had wanted to erase every trace. The steel needles several elite Aurors had created by combining a Weather Charm with Transfiguration should have wounded him. Perhaps some of his blood had fallen in the valley.
In fact, Scrimgeour had guessed correctly.
The day after Will defeated the Aurors, he sat in the Potions Classroom at Hogwarts.
His Potions Class textbook lay open on his desk as he mulled over everything that had happened. He felt that although this would make the Ministry of Magic stop searching for him, Dumbledore seemed to be training him in a new way.
Dumbledore's words kept echoing in his mind.
"Show them your strength, but not your darkness. Frighten them, but do not hurt them. Bring this to an end. This is an important lesson in becoming a powerful Wizard."
