Elsewhere, Lucius leaned against the wall at the back of the corridor, looking grim—something had gone wrong with the operation again!

Thinking it over, none of their operations that year seemed to have gone smoothly. From the Dark Lord's resurrection to the attempt to ambush and kill Harry Potter, and now this breakout at Azkaban, not one of their major operations had gone according to plan.

A streak of green light shot toward them. A Death Eater failed to dodge and dropped to the ground without a sound, save for the thud! of his fall.

Watching another Death Eater die, Lucius knew it was time to retreat. If he stayed any longer, he might truly lose his life. This operation's failure was not his fault. He had done everything he was supposed to do, and he would have an answer ready when the Dark Lord demanded one.

"Go! Get out of here!" Lucius shouted twice, but it was completely unnecessary. People had already begun slipping away. The Death Eaters who valued their lives most were hardly going to wait for him until the end.

Seeing so many of them fleeing faster than he was, Lucius cursed inwardly, then took to his heels and hurried toward the way they had come in.

The Death Eaters were in an almost total rout. To flee faster, some simply abandoned the exhausted prisoners they had just rescued. It was not as though there was any camaraderie between them anyway.

In a bitterly cold corridor, the Death Eaters scrambled toward the breach they had made. None of them noticed that someone had already broken away from the group.
