"Severus," Dumbledore said as a chair appeared behind Snape, "sit down. Let's talk."
Snape had no idea what Dumbledore was up to now. He leaned back in the chair, but his mind was still turning over what Will had just said.
He had to admit that Will was quick-witted. He had come up with a countermeasure in an instant.
Snape had already been prepared to take the fall for Will. Even if he had to sacrifice himself, he would keep Will safe. Now, though, it seemed that would not be necessary.
"Severus, stop letting your mind wander, will you?" Dumbledore brought Snape back to reality. "Tell me about this trip away from school. Do you really think finding experimental subjects for Will is a good thing?"
Snape had not discussed this trip with Dumbledore. He had essentially just informed him that he was leaving. Although this was how the two of them dealt with each other most of the time, Dumbledore was rather concerned when it involved Will and the experimental subjects he needed.
"Dumbledore?" Snape's brows drew tightly together. "Are you still doubting Will? Don't forget how much he risked and how much he did to give us the advantages we have now."
To Snape, Dumbledore was being utterly unreasonable. Will's actions had long since proven his character. He was unquestionably a diligent scholar, a loyal friend, an outstanding student, and a dependable comrade.
All Will was doing now was using some scum to research magic. Was Dumbledore really still doubting him over such a minor issue?
Snape was deeply displeased.
"Don't look at me like that, Severus. The last time you gave me that look was when Harry was petrified in his second year." Dumbledore sighed. "It seems Will truly means a great deal to you."
