"Do you still have the Necklace I gave you?" Jerry smiled and hugged Hermione, trying to comfort her. "As long as you have that Necklace, nothing can hurt you, not even Dementors!"
"Dementors really aren't that frightening!" Jerry continued, but his words clearly did nothing to ease Hermione's nerves. "Oh, well! Looks like I'll have to find time this term to teach you the Patronus Charm too!"
Hermione swallowed. His words were like a lifeline, and she clung tightly to him, soaking in the warmth of his embrace like sunshine on a winter's day as she struggled to suppress the fear surging through her. Yet her newly restored calm burst like a bubble an instant later. Pointing at the compartment door, Hermione let out a piercing scream!
A hand had suddenly appeared against the transparent glass of the compartment door! It was grayish-white, eerie and sinister, gleaming faintly, its surface mottled and slimy, like the hand of a long-dead corpse left to bloat and rot in water!
Jerry shielded Hermione behind him, keeping her away from the compartment door, then tightened his grip on his Wand. His scarlet eyes blazed to life!
Fear, oppression, anxiety, tension, irritation, dejection, grief, and every other kind of negative emotion instantly flooded the compartment. The Dementor hovering outside had been trying to push its hand through the gap in the door, but now it seemed to have encountered a terrifying predator it could not possibly resist. Its disgusting, rotting hand jerked back. A piercing, chilling shriek rang through the compartment, and the Dementor fled in panic.
Hermione squeezed her eyes shut, as though opening them would bring some terrible sight before her. She dared not look at Jerry, afraid that meeting his gaze would let those dark emotions drag her into a bottomless abyss.
