Background and History

Jerry grows up at London's Elizabeth Orphanage, where he deals with a persistent bully by luring him aside and frightening him into leaving Jerry alone. Dumbledore witnesses the confrontation, then visits Jerry personally after his Hogwarts acceptance. The orphanage matron reluctantly lets him attend and gives him £150 for supplies 1 2.

At Hogwarts, the Sorting Hat places Jerry in Slytherin despite his insistence that he belongs in Gryffindor. His Muggle upbringing draws hostility from some housemates; after an attack by older students, Snape suspects Jerry of injuring them but cannot establish proof. Jerry continues spending much of his time with Gryffindor friends, especially Hermione Granger 10 12 14 19.

Catherine Fawley's unexplained interest in Jerry prompts him to question his origins. Newt Scamander's reaction to a pointed question leads Jerry to suspect a connection to Gellert Grindelwald, which Dumbledore later confirms. Dumbledore withholds further details and says Jerry cannot meet Grindelwald until after his first year 18 31 46.

During Christmas at the orphanage, Jerry receives two gifts from an unknown sender. A ring among them bonds to his finger and transports him to a barren Pacific island. There, it guides him to a white stele that pulls him inside and overwhelms him with energy 49 50.

Appearance

Jerry has golden-blond hair and a gentle, handsome appearance that can make his harsher actions surprising to others 1 6 7.

• After the island Portkey activates, he senses its ring beneath the skin of his left middle finger; a matching black mark appears on his wrist 50.

Personality

Jerry is studious, curious, and protective of his friends. He teaches Hermione spells, saves Neville when he falls from a broom, and intervenes when Hermione faces danger. He also seeks power so he can live and act independently, rather than for Slytherin's prestige 8 25 33 37.

He carefully manages how others see him. His warmth toward friends coexists with violent retaliation against bullies, calculated displays of innocence, and a willingness to break rules for knowledge. He is cautious around people whose motives he cannot read, including Catherine Fawley and Quirrell 1 13 17 18 29.

Midnight Apparition

• The spell turns Jerry into a fast-flying, purple-black raven resembling his Patronus. It requires neither a spoken incantation nor a wand in his first test 34.
