After comforting Hermione, Jerry hurried to the Headmaster's Office at Hogwarts without wasting a moment. But someone had beaten him there.

The moment Jerry entered the imposing office, he spotted Professor Snape reporting something to Professor Dumbledore. It looked very much as though he was telling on him.

Snape cast Jerry a dark, mocking look. "I see you've prepared your defense." Then he turned to Dumbledore. "I've told you everything I have to say. You can ask him the rest." With that, Snape strode out and shut the door behind him.

Professor Dumbledore glanced after Snape, then turned to Jerry. "All right, Jerry. Your turn. What exactly happened?" He motioned for Jerry to sit on the sofa and tell him the whole story.

Jerry did not speak at once. Instead, he looked at the portraits of past headmasters hanging on the walls. Every one of them had craned forward, watching the room with the avid interest of onlookers hoping for a spectacle.

Professor Dumbledore caught on immediately. He went over and exchanged a few quiet words with the headmasters in their frames. They reluctantly began to leave. Only Headmaster Black seemed determined to stay, but as Hogwarts' least popular headmaster, he had few allies. The others seized him and dragged him out of the frame in the Headmaster's Office.

"There. Now it's just the two of us. Can you tell me?"

Jerry nodded slightly, his expression grave.

"I ran into Yaxley. In the Forbidden Forest."

"What?" Dumbledore sprang up from the sofa. "He dared come to Hogwarts? Was he alone?"
