Background / History
Ron belongs to the large, red-haired Weasley family. His parents are Arthur and Molly Weasley; his siblings include Bill, Charlie, Percy, Fred, George, and Ginny. At the Burrow, his bedroom becomes particularly crowded when the twins also stay there 6 282 286.
He begins Hogwarts in the same intake as Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, Neville Longbottom, and Jerry Green. Before Sorting, he repeats his family’s warnings about Slytherin and suspects Fred and George have exaggerated how painful the ceremony will be. He later belongs to Gryffindor and receives public recognition for his chess skill at the first-year feast 9 72.
His family’s limited finances repeatedly become a source of embarrassment and conflict. Draco Malfoy targets Ron’s old clothing, his father’s position, and his shabby dress robes. Ron also compares himself with his more visibly accomplished brothers, particularly Percy 9 187 230 297.
Appearance
- Red hair: Hagrid immediately recognizes him as a Weasley by his hair 8.
- Worn school clothing: Malfoy identifies him through the combination of red hair and old robes 9.
- Secondhand dress robes: His robes have conspicuous lace cuffs; he tries to hide them when Malfoy notices them on the Hogwarts Express 297.
Personality
Ron is loyal and quick to defend his friends and family, but his temper often threatens to turn arguments into fights. Neville stops him from casting a spell after Malfoy insults his family, and Harry restrains him when he tries to punch Malfoy over another taunt. His protectiveness can also be courageous: he pushes Harry out of the path of an attacking black dog and takes the bite himself 94 230 247.
Recognition matters to him. He dreams of representing his house at Quidditch and later imagines joining a national team. Hermione interprets his resentment of Harry’s Triwizard selection as jealousy rooted in being overlooked within a large family and beside a famous friend 24 290 316.
Ron uses jokes and impersonations to lighten the group’s mood. His imitation of Goyle makes the entire train compartment laugh, especially Luna. The same irreverence causes friction at home when he mocks Percy’s report on imported cauldrons 282 363.
His attitudes reflect assumptions he has absorbed from the wizarding world. He initially associates Slytherin with dark wizards and does not understand Hermione’s objection to house-elf servitude. Nevertheless, he treats Jerry as an exception to his distrust of Slytherin students and reacts with disgust to the Death Eaters’ cruelty toward a Muggle child 9 112 290 291.
