History

The Apostles kept such a low profile that Dumbledore and Grindelwald learned of them only after their activity increased in recent decades. Dumbledore believed they had spent centuries searching for—or waiting for—something. Their origins remain unknown, and Mandy later found that attempts to preserve findings about their past produced distorted information 32 209.

Their attention centers on Jerry Green. The Matron at his orphanage was planted there, and Dumbledore suspected that Jerry’s manufactured pet bird had been sent to protect him. When Jerry approached members at Hogwarts, Trevor Shackle and Catherine Fawley knelt and called him “Your Eminence,” revealing that they regarded him as more than a prospective recruit 32 54 60.

Catherine identifies Jerry as the Third Eminence. The Apostles’ records say earlier holders awakened after age twenty and underwent a completed ritual; Jerry awakened early and began consuming an incomplete sacrifice. What became of his predecessors remains unclear 98 101 154 163.

Organization and Leadership

• Catherine Fawley serves as Jerry’s intermediary and insists that her loyalty to him comes before the organization’s interests 87 98.
• Trevor Shackle obeys Jerry immediately upon recognizing his ring and wrist markings 59 60.
• André Albert works with the French branch and leads Apostles during the raid on the French Ministry of Magic 78.
• Internal divisions are substantial: Mammon sent members to capture Jerry, while Maro suspected that a powerful Apostle had attacked him in Egypt 141 154.

Beliefs and Objectives

• The Stigmata is the Apostles’ symbol and totem. Without its lightning bolt, its triangle and circle depict what Catherine calls an “unequal trinity”: magic empowers Apostles, Apostles spread magic to create wizards, and wizards’ growth strengthens magic 163.
• Their stated mission is to find the Eminence. Catherine says the Apostles expect supreme glory after fulfilling that mission, although members disagree about what that glory entails 103.
• Their proposed new order would exploit Muggles’ fear and desire for magic, then treat the bodies and souls of Muggles and wizards as resources for producing more magic 164.
• The final ritual is intended to make Jerry a “magic unifier” or deity. According to Jerry’s later account, the Apostles judged two previous attempts failures and prepared Voldemort’s soul as what they believed would be a sufficiently evil sacrifice 394.

Methods and Notable Operations

• Concealment: Members hide their identities, and protective magic prevents Dumbledore and Grindelwald from extracting useful information from their minds 32.
• Voldemort: Catherine says the Apostles guided him toward soul magic and Horcruxes from childhood, arranging his death and planned return so his soul could be offered to Jerry 60. Dumbledore also says they altered Lily Potter’s protective magic on Harry 98.
• French Ministry raid: Apostles impersonated the Pure-Blood Party to draw Aurors away, disabled the Ministry’s alarms, subdued those who remained, and removed artifacts from the Department of Mysteries under Jerry’s direction 78.
• Magical knowledge: Murals in the Soul Illusion preserve fragments of the organization’s history and spells; generations of Apostles have deciphered distinctive magic from them 154.

Trivia

• Apostles use “Mudblood” as an insult for wizards outside their organization, regardless of the term’s usual blood-status meaning 142.
• Catherine says her silver ring was passed down from Tawil-at’Umr, whom she identifies as the Apostles’ first Eminence. Its purpose is unknown, and inquiry into the organization’s past is forbidden 211.
• When Jerry awakened after his interrupted ritual, Apostles around the world felt their magic surge and knelt facing Hogwarts 159.
