Background / History

Youth and Grindelwald

Bathilda Bagshot introduced the young Dumbledore to Gellert Grindelwald after Grindelwald’s expulsion from Durmstrang. She considered Albus an exemplary student and hoped he would be a good influence. Instead, the two became increasingly close. Their relationship fractured around the night Dumbledore’s younger sister, Ariana, died; Bathilda remembered Grindelwald returning wounded and distraught before leaving Godric’s Hollow, but did not know the full circumstances 168.

Dumbledore later defeated Grindelwald and exposed his attempt to secure authority through a Qilin revived with Necromancy. Despite that history, the novel depicts them working together again, with their old romantic attachment acknowledged in references to Dumbledore as Grindelwald’s “old flame” 131 168. Dumbledore also admits that he himself first championed “For the greater good!” in his youth 356.

Jerry’s Family

Jerry’s parents, David Gellert Dumbledore and Mandy Albus Grindelwald, were created through alchemy. They were believed incapable of having children, making Mandy’s pregnancy a shock to both Dumbledore and Grindelwald. After confirming the pregnancy at St. Mungo’s, they regarded Jerry as a miraculous gift to their family 69 83 193.

Both grandfathers strongly opposed sending Jerry to the Apostles’ orphanage, but ultimately accepted his parents’ decision. Nicolas Flamel had offered to raise him instead. David and Mandy also concealed parts of their investigation into the Apostles from the two older wizards, believing that powerful people’s knowledge of the future could itself endanger that future 193 208.

The old Dumbledore house in Godric’s Hollow remains a source of painful memories. Although Jerry later lives there, Dumbledore refuses to cross its threshold when visiting him 111 394.

Appearance

  • Elderly: Explicitly described as a centenarian 145.
  • Build and posture: Tall and straight-backed 308.
  • Clothing: Appears in wizarding robes during the Egyptian expedition and white pajamas while handling Harry’s late-night emergency 144 392.
  • Expression: Frequently greets students and visitors with a warm, reassuring smile 2 300.

Personality

Dumbledore is patient and personally attentive. He visits Jerry’s orphanage himself, calmly answers the Matron’s objections, and explains the financial assistance available to students from Muggle backgrounds. His affection also appears in ordinary gestures: buying Jerry lunch, accompanying him on shopping trips, and encouraging him not to endure grief alone 2 5 82 210.

That warmth coexists with deliberate secrecy. He postpones explanations about Jerry’s ancestry, keeps his knowledge of Horcruxes hidden for years, and helps steer Jerry into contact with the Apostles. Jerry consequently resents his surveillance and being treated as a pawn. Dumbledore worries about the consequences of his plans, particularly whether Jerry might genuinely embrace the organization 32 54 59 97.

His moral outlook emphasizes love, companionship, and responsibility rather than power alone. He warns Jerry against obsession with the Elder Wand, insists that rules have consequences, and believes Jerry needs friends who can guide him. Nevertheless, he supplies dangerous magical texts and participates in plans involving Voldemort, Harry, and the Apostles 81 82 90 98 176.

Dumbledore is not emotionally detached from those risks. A severed arm bearing the Apostles’ mark initially makes him fear that Jerry has been harmed, provoking fury and alarm. Later, Jerry’s explanation of limitless magical growth leaves him uneasy despite his own standing among the world’s strongest wizards 144 356.

  • Forbidden Alchemy — Gives this dangerous text to Jerry only after repeated warnings. It contains human magical-organ modification and other horrifying experiments 81 83.
  • Secrets of the Darkest Art — Consults the book and later hands it to Jerry during their discussion of Horcruxes 90 97.

  • Visits Jerry at Godric’s Hollow to question Voldemort’s place in his plans. Jerry reveals the Apostles’ attempt to engineer an absolutely evil sacrifice and explicitly refuses allegiance to Dumbledore or any other faction 394.
