Since Hu Gan had yet to arrive, Xiao Yan chatted idly with the others.
As they talked, he learned why there were six of them: he had performed so exceptionally that Hu Gan had given him a guaranteed spot without taking one of the original five.
Xiao Yan had no objection. All that mattered was getting into the Book Repository.
After they had chatted a while longer, Hu Gan finally arrived.
Seeing how well they were getting along, the old man smiled with satisfaction. "Is everyone ready?"
They all nodded.
Hu Gan said no more. He turned and led them straight to the Book Repository.
Before long, an imposing, ancient pavilion came into view.
The entire pavilion was built from dark, aged timber. Beneath its eaves hung a weathered plaque, its inscription so eroded by time that they could barely make out the four characters for "Book Repository."
Hu Gan approached the entrance, straightened his robes, and bowed respectfully to the doors. "The top five in this selection tournament have been decided. Elders, please open the doors."
His aged voice echoed through the valley, lingering for a long time.
Moments later, a faint ripple of Space Fluctuation appeared before the doors.
Two figures in gray robes materialized before them, as though they had been standing there all along.
"Not bad, not bad. This year's students are genuinely impressive." One of the gray-robed elders swept his gaze over the group and nodded in approval.
When his gaze finally fell on Xiao Yan, he visibly jolted. His raspy voice turned solemn. "Young friend, are you a newly appointed Elder of the academy? May I ask your name?"
Xiao Yan stepped forward and cupped his hands. "I'm Xiao Yan. Greetings, honored elders."
Beside him, Hu Gan looked so proud his beard practically bristled.
