Background / History
The Yellow Springs Demon Saint was a legendary expert from ten thousand years earlier. After failing to reach Dou Di, he studied cultivation methods, combat skills, pill formulas, and ancient texts. Although his physical possessions were lost, he retained this knowledge after his revival 2 4.
Wu Bai revived him using a fragment of an inheritance stele. The Demon Saint regarded the boy’s ability to bring back someone dead for ten thousand years as extraordinary, particularly because Wu Bai did not understand the gift himself. He accepted Wu Bai as his first student and initially explored the city to learn about the present era before deciding how to teach him 2 26.
Witnessing Wu Bai’s family abuse convinced him that the boy’s home was unsuitable for cultivation. He admired Wu Bai for remaining disciplined rather than becoming bitter and promised to protect him. At first, his plans also centered on helping Wu Bai become powerful enough to restore him fully to life 2.
After Wu Bai became a Dou Zhe, the Demon Saint supplied the Sunflame Art and planned a discreet route toward alchemical training. He later taught force control, movement, and combat through increasingly demanding practical exercises. At Jia Nan Academy, he cautioned Wu Bai about its powerful experts while encouraging him to display his alchemist rank as a deterrent 4 8 13 14 24 25.
Their partnership deepened when Wu Bai explained his knowledge of future events as a dream. The Demon Saint accepted the explanation calmly, considering foresight less remarkable than his own revival. He subsequently investigated the magma beneath the Heavenly Flame Qi Refining Tower and confirmed Wu Bai’s information about the infant Fallen Heart Flame and the Ancient Emperor’s Cave Mansion 26 29 30.
By the later Inner Academy period, he was also teaching Han Yue. He continued assessing Wu Bai’s combat weaknesses and considered reviving another person the following year to help with Heavenly Flames; the passage does not identify that person 36 40.
Appearance
- Appears as an elderly man with an aged face and a kindly smile 2.
- Manifests as a floating soul without a physical body 11 23 32.
- Can emerge from and return to the small stone sphere worn against Wu Bai’s chest 2 32 36.
Personality
The Demon Saint is protective and affectionate without demanding formal deference. He treats safeguarding Wu Bai as a teacher’s responsibility, takes pride in his disciple’s achievements, and welcomes the boy becoming more assertive. He is particularly sympathetic to the guardedness and premature maturity caused by Wu Bai’s upbringing 2 7 14.
His warmth coexists with blunt criticism and demanding instruction. He does not resent Wu Bai’s lack of experience, but steadily raises his training standards and exposes weaknesses through sparring. He values humility, self-awareness, and the willingness to correct shortcomings more than an appearance of effortless perfection 23 24 40.
He frequently teases Wu Bai about Han Yue and eagerly encourages their relationship. Despite this enthusiasm, he hesitates to interfere when Wu Bai struggles to respond to her confession, fearing that a push might backfire 6 9 11 15 16.
Abilities & Skills
Soul Mastery and Perception
His soul methods retain the foundations of his former Emperor Realm attainment even though his current soul is weaker 4 32.
- Mental communication: Speaks directly into Wu Bai’s mind during cultivation, travel, and social encounters 4 6 26.
- Environmental control: Silences Wu Bai’s room while overseeing his first Dou Zhe breakthrough 4.
- Remote monitoring: Leaves a trace of perception on Wu Bai while exploring the city; later covers a radius exceeding ten kilometers while watching the villa 2 36.
- Concealment: States that the Library Pavilion’s two Peak Dou Zong elders cannot detect him, and that he would reconsider concealment if they reached Dou Zun 32.
- Power assessment: Identifies Gu Xun’er’s hidden female guard and her Nine-Star Dou Huang strength 26.
- Knowledge transfer: Transmits cultivation methods, techniques, and personal experience through direct contact 8 24 32.
Reciprocal Soul Bond
Wu Bai’s revival of the Demon Saint creates a connection between their souls that benefits both of them 14.
- The Demon Saint’s stronger soul accelerates Wu Bai’s Soul Power growth; a larger gap produces faster growth 14.
- Wu Bai’s improving Soul Power restores the Demon Saint, which widens the gap and strengthens the cycle 14.
- The Demon Saint needs no restorative treasures for this process and can judge Wu Bai’s spiritual growth through changes in his own power 14 16.
- He wonders whether the cycle might eventually carry him beyond the Emperor Realm’s limits; this remains a possibility, not an achieved advancement 14.
Combat and Protection
- Despite his weakened condition, he claims sufficient strength to handle several Dou Zong 2.
- Can temporarily control Wu Bai’s body, transporting him rapidly to training grounds before returning control 24.
- Remains a potential “spirit possession” safeguard if Wu Bai encounters multiple Dou Huang opponents 28.
- Easily evades Wu Bai’s force and flame attacks during sparring, including after Wu Bai reaches Eight-Star Dou Ling 25 40.
- Understands Wu Bai’s compressed-force attack through his Soul Power and critiques its speed and practical effectiveness while dodging it 40.
Cultivation Knowledge and Instruction
The lowest-ranked cultivation methods and combat skills he remembers are Earth Tier. He explicitly states that he never paid attention to lower-tier material 4.
| Teaching | Rank | Instruction and Applications |
|---|---|---|
| Sunflame Art | Low Earth Tier | Develops abundant Dou Qi and also tempers the body from within. He postpones its body-training component until Wu Bai reaches Great Dou Master 4 6 25. |
| Primordial Force / Mixed Origin Force | Low Earth Tier | Teaches control over ten currents of force, including hard and yielding force, offense, defense, and counterattacks. Later instruction develops finger, palm, fist, and kick applications through different meridians 8 25. |
| Glimmering Shadow | High Earth Tier | Provides exceptional speed, concealment, two half-strength shadow clones, and spatial exchanges with the clones. Exchange range depends on Soul Power 23 24. |
| Words of Ice | High Earth Tier | Supplied to Han Yue through Wu Bai, with detailed cultivation instructions 32. |
- Prepares Glimmering Shadow training with medicinal baths that open tiny meridians, then uses venomous bees and swamp snakes to teach evasion and concealment 24.
- Recommends Earth Core Body Tempering Milk for body cultivation and later aptitude improvement 25.
- Recognizes Wu Bai’s defensive fighting instincts but recommends training with Han Yue to improve his weaker close-combat skills 23 40.
Pill Knowledge and Limitations
He is not an alchemist, despite remembering valuable formulas and supporting Wu Bai’s early studies 2 8 32.
- Remembers Fifth-grade aptitude-enhancing formulas and higher-grade alternatives involving Earth Core Body Tempering Milk 14 25.
- Advises Wu Bai on taking the Bone-Tempering Spirit-Nurturing Pill and later supervises a combined pill-and-medicinal-bath treatment 18 29.
- Has limited familiarity with common low-grade herbs and acknowledges that he can offer little help with alchemy itself 5 8.
Equipment / Items
- Stone sphere pendant — His usual resting place. He reshapes an uneven pebble into a smooth sphere with a hole so Wu Bai can wear it on a string 2 32.
- Ruler — Uses it to tap Han Yue’s head when she becomes distracted during a cultivation lesson; its origin is unspecified 36.
- High-grade Storage Ring, sought — Decides he needs one to retreat into rather than remain present during Wu Bai and Han Yue’s private moments. Acquisition is not shown 31.
Relationships
- Wu Bai — His first disciple, protectorate, and partner in spiritual recovery. Their mutual trust grows strong enough for Wu Bai to disclose his foreknowledge, while Wu Bai refuses to risk injuring him with an experimental finishing attack 2 14 25 26.
- Han Yue — Wu Bai’s partner and later his cultivation student. Her willingness to sacrifice an Earth Tier technique for Wu Bai earns his approval; he reveals himself to her, provides advanced teachings, and playfully calls her his “disciple’s wife” 32 36 39.
- Wu Bai’s biological family — He condemns their treatment of Wu Bai and regards the household as harmful to his disciple’s cultivation and development 2 7.
