Background and History

Wu Bai is the second son of the Wu Family head in Tianbei City. A reincarnator with memories of a previous life, he grows up estranged from his family: his father beats and belittles him, his mother does not intervene, and his brothers look on. At fourteen, he sees reaching Dou Zhe as his best chance to leave. When an old man’s spirit emerges from a pebble he has kept, Wu Bai immediately asks to become his student. The spirit accepts and reveals himself as the Yellow Springs Demon Saint 1 2 3.

His father sends him to train with the Han Family, intending the arrangement as a dismissal. Instead, Wu Bai receives Qi Gathering Powder, becomes a Dou Zhe, and discovers his fire and wood affinities qualify him to study alchemy. He learns through Zhu Qian’s demonstrations, repeated practice, and the Demon Saint’s private guidance. Han Chi supplies resources in return for Wu Bai’s growing alchemical expertise 3 4 5 6.

Wu Bai travels with Han Yue to Jia Nan Academy, where his pill-making earns him recognition and early access to Inner Academy training. He later returns to take the formal Inner Academy selection tournament alongside Han Yue. By then, he has supplemented his alchemy with combat training and advanced to Dou Ling 11 20 21 22 29 31.

Appearance

Wu Bai is described as youthful-faced. After a period of training and medicinal baths, he stands 1.78 metres tall and is still growing; Han Yue later notices that he has grown taller and that his eyes look brighter 20 24 26.

Wu Bai is cautious about dependence and obligation. He initially regards the Han Family’s support as an exchange to repay when he is able, and he prefers to make the terms of Elder Huo’s valuable gift clear. Despite his achievements, he repeatedly judges his cultivation against stronger imagined peers and readily acknowledges his lack of combat experience 4 9 20 21.

His progress depends as much on persistence as talent: he studies demonstrations closely, corrects mistakes through repeated attempts, and protects time for cultivation even when pill orders increase. With people he trusts, he is warmer and occasionally playful. He refuses to aim an uncertain new attack at the Demon Saint, even after his teacher assures him it cannot hurt him 5 18 19 25.
