The Old Storehouse investigation

Naruto’s investigation of the Nine-Tails’ Attack leads to the Sarutobi Clan Compound. Shinnosuke Sarutobi, who oversees its nighttime defenses, tries to block a search of the Old Storehouse. Naruto finds a chest there containing the route to Kushina’s birthing room, ANBU orders, and his bloodstained infant swaddling cloth. A would-be arsonist says Shinnosuke ordered the chest burned; Shinnosuke says Mitokado Homura and Ryosuke Sarutobi brought it to the clan 17.

A hidden ledger records Root’s payment to Ryosuke for passing on the birthing-room route. Other records describe a plan to blame the Uchiha for the attack. The evidence implicates particular clan members and the use of clan property; it does not establish that every Sarutobi knew what the storehouse held 18 26.

Academy hostage crisis

Clan elder Sarutobi Muneyoshi takes Ninja Academy children and teachers hostage to halt the inquiry. After Naruto rescues them, the clan raises its battle-readiness signal. Sarutobi Sōgo arrives with armed clansmen, accuses Naruto and the Uchiha of fabricating evidence, and orders an attack rather than reading the ledger Naruto offers him. Naruto defeats the attackers without killing them 24 25.

The Third Hokage then reads the ledger aloud and orders his clansmen to explain their actions publicly. Some younger Sarutobi say they knew nothing of the records and had answered the battle signal believing their clan was under attack 26.

Public inquiry

At Konoha’s public hearing, Sōgo admits that clan elders kept the incriminating boxes and that the fighters attacked Naruto without checking the facts. He says Muneyoshi planned the hostage-taking alone and offers the clan up for investigation. Sarutobi members are subsequently registered and called to explain their combat preparations 32 37.
