Background / History

Covering Tobirama’s Retreat

In Konoha Year 20, Danzō accompanies Tobirama’s party during its escape from Kumogakure forces in the Land of Lightning. Encouraged beforehand by Kagami Uchiha, he volunteers alongside Hiruzen to act as a decoy. Tobirama chooses him, unexpectedly turning his declaration of loyalty into an apparent death sentence. Danzō initially resents the outcome, but Kagami refuses to abandon him and joins his stand 1.

During the ensuing battle, Danzō shields Kagami from a barrage of ninjutsu. A Kumogakure jōnin exploits the opening and severs his right arm. He continues fighting despite the wound, while Kagami defeats Ginkaku and eliminates the remaining attackers. After Kagami bandages him, the pair set out to protect Tobirama again 2.

They reach their teacher in time to help defeat Kinkaku. Although Hiruzen reports Danzō and Kagami as fallen, both return to Konoha alive with Tobirama. Danzō is severely weakened by blood loss and retreats to the Shimura compound to recover, insisting that losing an arm will not end his ninja career 3 4 5 6.

Service Under Kagami

At Tobirama’s deathbed, Danzō is surprised by the appointment of Kagami as Third Hokage but feels no jealousy toward his friend. He resolves to support him and defend him from threats 14.

Danzō expects to receive command of the newly created Root department and is disappointed when Kagami appoints Hiruzen instead. Kagami explains that Danzō’s injuries make such an exhausting assignment unsuitable and promises to restart Hashirama-cell research to restore his arm. He instead entrusts Danzō with a centralized intelligence department 16.

The appointment is announced at the jōnin assembly, giving Danzō authority over intelligence coordination and substantial personnel and resources. At Kagami’s inauguration, his responsibilities expand to include foreign affairs. He resents Hiruzen’s elevation to Hokage Advisor but feels reassured by his own two major portfolios 19 28.

After five years of research, compatible Hashirama cells regenerate Danzō’s missing arm and raise his strength to Kage level 31.

Land of Grass Campaign

Kagami sends Danzō to prepare the Second Legion against Iwagakure. Danzō organizes a coordinated offensive involving a vanguard, frontal force, infiltrators, and reserves rather than committing everything to a direct assault 36 42.

At Broken Cloud Gorge, he arrives with three hundred reserves and reveals that Iwami’s force is preventing reinforcements from Blackstone Fortress. He counters Jianyan’s landslide with Wind Release and assigns Sakumo to pursue the enemy commander 47 48.

Following victory, Danzō orders battlefield clearance, treatment of the wounded, and collection of inherited-ability samples requested by Hiruko. He sends Orochimaru and Jiraiya to demand compensation from the Land of Grass, while withdrawing troops outside Blackstone Fortress according to Kagami’s instructions 48.

He later relays Kagami’s mission for Sakumo to accompany Kakuzu to the Land of Wind and curb the Kazekage’s territorial ambitions without needlessly provoking a wider war. When Danzō returns to Konoha for a village feast, Kagami publicly praises his command and names him “Fire’s Joy” 52 70.

Uzumaki Refugees and Renewed War

During the fall of the Land of Whirlpools, Danzō initially holds the Land of Fire’s eastern coast to receive refugees. He explains to Sakumo that their orders are not to charge into battle against the allied attackers, and regards bringing Uzumaki survivors into Konoha as more advantageous than maintaining a distant ally. When the survivors arrive, he orders treatment and an escort to the village 78.

Danzō subsequently leads two thousand Konoha ninja into the confrontation among the attacking villages. Backed by Sakumo, he demands the release of every captured Uzumaki, threatening an immediate assault against any village that refuses. The opposing forces withdraw, and the rescue brings Konoha’s sheltered Uzumaki population to nearly one hundred 82 83.

Back in Konoha, he fiercely opposes Hiruzen’s call for restraint and supports retaliation for the massacre. Kagami places the village on a full war footing, then assigns Danzō and the young Sannin to guard the Rain–Grass border against Amegakure while remaining alert to Iwagakure 83 84 89.

Appearance

  • Clothing: Favors dark, close-fitting clothes and combat gear. At Broken Cloud Gorge, he wears a fitted Anbu uniform beneath a black robe 17 37 47 83.
  • Bearing: Commonly has a cold, stern expression and an intimidating presence 17 42 83.
  • Former injury: His right arm is severed at the shoulder, leaving an empty sleeve and a heavily bandaged wound during recovery. The arm is later regenerated 5 6 31.

Personality

Danzō combines personal loyalty with a ruthless approach to security. Kagami describes him as meticulous, decisive, patient, and steady; his intelligence appointment also emphasizes his suspicious nature and talent for exposing spies. He is prepared to undertake morally darker work so that Kagami can preserve an upright public image 16 19 78.

His friendship with Kagami draws out a warmer side. Kagami’s refusal to leave him behind dispels his resentment during the retreat, and later concern for his health strengthens his devotion. Public recognition also changes his relationship with ambition: after being celebrated as Fire’s Joy, he privately questions whether becoming Hokage still matters 1 16 70.

His rivalry with Hiruzen remains sharp. He repeatedly treats Hiruzen’s objections as failures to support Kagami, resents his advisor position, and uses Tobirama’s legacy and the Will of Fire to pressure him. Yet his battlefield conduct is methodical rather than merely belligerent: he coordinates flanking operations, retains reserves, and obeys orders to halt further advances 18 27 28 42 48 83.

Notable Quotes

“Teacher, you are the Hokage of the village, the foundation of Konoha. The village can lose anyone, but it must never lose you.” 1

“Thanks, Monkey. Even with only one arm, I won't give up being a ninja!” 6

“Whether my arm is restored or not, from this day on, my life is yours to command, and Konoha's to use.” 16

Trivia

  • Unlike the Danzō remembered from Kagami’s original story, this version does not lead Root: Kagami assigns that department to Hiruzen 16 36.
  • “Fire’s Joy” deliberately contrasts with the shadow-bearing “Pot Kage” of Kagami’s memories. Kagami envisions Danzō as his partner rather than someone left to carry Konoha’s darkness alone 36.
  • Danzō orders Grass Ninja Leader Caomang to call himself “Fool.” When Danzō later visits the peacekeeping camp, the leader introduces himself using that name 48 52.
