In that future he could no longer remember clearly, what role had this young man played?
"Fellow Daoist Wen, you know Vast Sea City well?"
"Very well. Extremely well."
"Are you from Vast Sea City?"
"Not really." Wen Ziheng rubbed the back of his head, looking innocent. "I was traveling to gain experience and passed through Vast Sea City. I just stayed a little longer than I meant to. Lately, I've been thinking it's about time I went somewhere else."
"Oh, I see." Pei Ling nodded and walked ahead with his hands behind his back, leaving Wen Ziheng to stare at his contemplative silhouette.
Wen Ziheng: And then?
He wasn't going to ask where I came from? Why I stayed in Vast Sea City so long? What drew me here, or where I'm going next? How am I supposed to keep this conversation going if he won't play along?
Pei Ling: Someone will probably lose patience and tell me on his own.
After Wen Ziheng and Pei Ling left, Qiao Ranran checked on the mangled man again. His tenacious will to live was working an unbelievable miracle.
Compared with the terrible state he had been in when she found him, the difference was striking—even if he still looked awful. The Demon Race really did have formidable constitutions. The mangled man had more or less regained human form. Anyone who saw him now would think he was gravely injured, not that he had no business still being alive.
At this point, she could hand him over to someone else without leaving them at a loss. Treating him would be troublesome, but possible. Nor would anyone suspect her. A high-level Medicine Cultivator, aided by Elixirs, could easily save a mangled mass of flesh like that. No one would believe a Qi Refining Stage cultivator had done it.
After some thought, Qiao Ranran used her needles on the mangled man once more to stabilize his condition. It would be awkward if a change of physician made him worse.
"I know you can hear me. There isn't much more I can do. With an Origin Returning Pill and my Acupuncture Technique, your meridians could be repaired. Without them, even if your flesh and bones recover completely, you'll be crippled. I'll leave you in Vast Sea City soon and find a reliable doctor to continue your treatment. The rest is up to fate."
After a moment's thought, Qiao Ranran added firmly, "I charge for treatment, too. I saved your life with my own hands, and I can tell you want to keep it. So you still owe me for that. You can pay for my first treatment later. If you find an Origin Returning Pill but no one who can repair your meridians, bring enough to cover my fee and come find me at the Profound Heart Sect."
"Of course, if you can't find an Origin Returning Pill, the ingredients will do. I can find someone to refine it for you." Her master seemed to be quite good at that sort of thing. Refining a Sixth Tier Elixir required at least Golden Core Stage cultivation. Qiao Ranran knew her limits. Even with the Blood Jade Nectar to support her, her cultivation would advance slowly for some time.
"Oh, right, the Profound Heart Sect isn't easy to find. Whether you can reach it depends on your luck." Given the sect's secluded nature, she suspected that even if she told him where it was, he might not be able to get through its gates without the right affinity. Just thinking about that was awkward. "Oh, and do you know the Elixir Formula for the Origin Returning Pill? It's fine if you don't. The formula isn't especially complicated, and the supplementary ingredients aren't rare. I should have some in storage. But a few of the main ingredients are hard to find, so you'll have to get those yourself. Let me tell you what they are!..."
Pei Ling heard Qiao Ranran talking to herself from a distance when he returned. Even without any chance of a reply, she could entertain herself with a conversation as if the other person were answering.
He arrived just in time to hear her reciting an Elixir Formula. From where he stood, Pei Ling kicked a small stone into the tree trunk beside her.
She looked up at the sound. When she saw Pei Ling approaching, she gave him a dazzling smile, so lovely in the sunlight that it almost hurt to look at her. "Junior Brother Pei, you're back!"
Pei Ling's eyes flickered. He was about to speak when he heard sharp intakes of breath behind him.
The two medical hall apprentices he had brought to help were struck speechless by Qiao Ranran's radiant smile. Their awed gasps made them inhale so sharply that they both choked and broke into coughing fits.
The smile just beginning to form on Pei Ling's face vanished.
Once the two apprentices caught their breath, they instinctively avoided Pei Ling, who was giving off an inexplicable chill but had yet to say anything. They composed themselves and got to work. They knew they had come to collect an injured patient who "couldn't easily be moved." But when they saw him, they felt that description hardly did his condition justice.
Pei Ling had warned them, so the apprentices had come well prepared. As the largest medical hall in Vast Sea City, they encountered all kinds of injuries. For patients who couldn't easily be moved, they had a specialized Spirit Artifact for transport. It was safe, comfortable, and had no side effects.
Qiao Ranran had seen Spirit Artifacts like it before, even ones more advanced than this. Still, a medical hall that could casually send one out with two mere Qi Refining Stage apprentices was clearly wealthy.
Then again, she was only at the Qi Refining Stage herself. She was in no position to look down on them.
Medical halls weren't charities. Saving a life cost money, and Pei Ling had paid out of his own pocket to get the apprentices sent over. Besides his interest in Qiao Ranran's medical skills, he was curious about this half-demon clinging to life.
Anything that fought that hard to survive was interesting—like the little pet of his that was still in the Abyss.
He had ruined those people's plot against the Pei Family and even trapped them in the Ten Thousand Bones Soul-Revival Formation, so they could no longer lock him in the Abyss. Still, he intended to visit when he had time. There were plenty of good things down there.
Qiao Ranran kept her attention on the mangled man throughout the journey. After chatting with the apprentices, she discovered they praised their medical hall without a shred of restraint. One thing, at least, was clear: with the lord of Vast Sea City behind it, the Vast Sea Medical Hall could boldly bear the city's name. If it ranked second among the city's medical halls, no one would dare claim first place.
