Background / History
Meeting Li Xiang
Lin Xuanshu introduces himself to Li Xiang as a Shangqing Sect disciple from Northern Mount Mao, accompanied by his junior brother, Lin Xuanguang. He accepts Li Xiang’s explanation that his unusual skills come from his grandfather’s teachings 7.
After dismissing Li Xiang’s warning of a bloody calamity, Xuanshu nearly dies at Blackwater Pool and survives through his master’s intervention. He subsequently thanks Li Xiang: the warning about a great fiend gave them some preparation, even though he had not taken the prediction seriously 12.
Learning that Li Xiang wants to study martial arts in Linjiang County, Xuanshu quietly asks Qin Zhong to bring him to Shocking Heron Martial Hall. Li Xiang discovers this favor only when they reunite nearly a month later 94.
Return to Riverside
Xuanshu returns to Riverside to visit Li Xiang and Qin Zhong, protect a young Tianjin noblewoman on behalf of the Marshal’s Mansion, and answer a mysterious invitation promising a major opportunity. His master remains in Tianjin as a World Martial Arts Tournament judge 94.
He initially regrets Xuanguang’s decision to abandon Daoism for military cultivation, but accepts Li Xiang’s advice to respect his junior brother’s ambitions. His reunion also reveals a less dignified history: Ye Qingyao has defeated him before, and he flees when she proposes another spar 94.
Suspicions About Lin Shouzhen
At Haitang’s gathering, Xuanshu announces that he intends to kill Lin Shouzhen—but only after obtaining conclusive proof that the man is an impostor. He believes his real master died before he descended the mountain, perhaps earlier, and that a monster now wears his skin 97.
His principal evidence is a change in character. During the Blackwater River incident, Lin Shouzhen protected their party from a River-Patrolling Yaksha but did not stop an evil advancement ritual that endangered other passengers. Xuanshu insists that his formerly uncompromising master would never have tolerated it, even at a cost to his cultivation. He also suspects Xuanguang’s departure from Daoism may reflect an earlier realization that something was wrong 97.
Blackwater Ghost Calamity and Blessed Land Contest
At the Blackwater expedition, Xuanshu recognizes Li Xiang’s Daoist potential and offers him a guaranteed place among Maoshan’s inner disciples. He respects Li Xiang’s decision to continue his martial path. During the mission, he destroys a Ghostman’s “human medicinal field,” where living people are used to cultivate spirit herbs, and helps lead the assault on the Ghost Clan’s defenses 153 156.
After the calamity, he seeks out Xuanguang and later travels with the group toward Tianjin and Jade Capital. He subsequently leaves to participate in the struggle over the Spirit Ruins Blessed Land 162 166 176.
During the Blessed Land Contest, Xuanshu and Wuneng approach Zhang Yunshang to seek teammates, specifically hoping to recruit Ye Qingyao for the Third Realm field. Xuanshu also supports Li Xiang with information about Zhang Qilan and Maoshan’s Thunder-Scattering Art, which becomes crucial in the First Realm semifinal 191 206.
Discovering Maoshan’s Crisis
Xuanshu declines Li Xiang’s invitation to join his Special Operations Team because he suspects that he himself may have been possessed and replaced. Unwilling to endanger his friend, he returns toward Maoshan after learning more about the circumstances surrounding himself and his sect 224 225.
He later investigates the Heavenly Demon Divine Church’s connection to Maoshan and follows its seventh young master, Tian Yan. An encounter with a Fourth Realm opponent nearly kills him before Zhang Yunqing intervenes. Returning to Maoshan is no longer safe: he faces being consumed by the Eternal Ones or having his mind erased to become an Eternal Puppet. Zhang Yunqing invites him to accompany the Dragon City investigation instead 234.
The discovery visibly shakes his faith. On the subsequent journey, he becomes unusually withdrawn, and his Pure Daoist Qi appears stagnant and disordered 235.
Azure Dragon Cavern and Netherworld
In the Azure Dragon Cavern, Xuanshu supplies lightning-based illumination, warning, and protection against Yin Spirits. His knowledge of Maoshan’s ancient records helps him recognize the Azure Dragon Soul and understand the principle of Taiji Unification 260 261 267 269 270.
After reaching the Netherworld, he uses a forbidden death-substitute art to conceal his life force. He follows Li Xiang’s paper double to a refuge, removes the talisman, and collapses with severe backlash. Li Xiang stabilizes him using medical skills and pure-yang energy 276 277.
Xuanshu then connects Qin Zhong’s emergence as Yin Tianzi to the forbidden Death’s Extremity Gives Birth formation at Qin’s great-grandmother’s grave. He presents this as an explanation for Qin’s transformation, not a certainty about whether Qin retains his former identity. He and Li Xiang agree to remain hidden rather than rely on their old friendship with the Netherworld’s new ruler 277.
Later Actions
After surviving the Netherworld ordeal, Xuanshu resolves to find his granduncle-masters and expose the corruption threatening Maoshan. He promises to seek Li Xiang out again after purging the sect; the provided account does not establish that this purge is completed 307 312.
He later witnesses a body identical to Li Xiang’s and is deeply shaken, but believes Li Xiang’s denial of prior knowledge. After the Great Sage’s final intervention, Xuanshu and Guo Kai catch the unconscious Li Xiang. Xuanshu examines him and finds no physical injury, stronger meridians, and newly harmonized powers 322 330.
Appearance
- Clothing: Usually wears an azure Daoist robe 153 173.
- Face and bearing: Repeatedly described as gentle and jade-like, with clear, calm eyes 153 191.
- Sword: Carries a sword on his back; it is later described as a Dharma Sword wrapped in yellow talismans 153 234.
- Combat demeanor: His mild bearing gives way to the stern presence of someone administering heaven’s punishment when he unleashes Thunder Arts 156.
Personality
Xuanshu is considerate without making a performance of generosity. He remembers Li Xiang’s passing interest in martial arts, arranges an introduction without being asked, and dismisses the favor as a small matter. He likewise admires Li Xiang’s later achievements without jealousy, openly recognizing that Li Xiang’s First Realm mastery exceeds his own at that stage 94 197.
His sociability extends across sects and temperaments. Li Xiang observes that Tang Hua’an, Zhang Qilan, Zhang Yunqing, Guo Kai, and even the reserved Chu Tian respond comfortably or respectfully to him. Xuanshu’s warmth is neither fawning nor distant, allowing him to maintain friendships across martial, official, and Daoist circles 261.
His restraint has moral limits. He warns Xuanguang that attacking an ordinary person out of anger damages Yin Virtue, yet responds fiercely to the Ghost Clan’s abuse of living humans. His investigation of Maoshan similarly places loyalty to its teachings above obedience to potentially corrupted authorities: he risks being silenced rather than simply fleeing 8 153 261.
Abilities & Skills
Maoshan Thunder Arts
- Summons more than a dozen silver lightning bolts with a brief invocation, striking concentrations of Ghost Qi and Third Realm Ghostmen 156.
- Uses orthodox lightning that is particularly effective against yin-aligned evil 156.
- Forms Yang Five Thunders into lightning chains capable of restraining Chu Tian 236.
- Provides illumination and early warning through lightning and lightning talismans 261.
- Limits: His lightning talismans lose twenty percent of their effectiveness in the Azure Dragon Cavern’s Middle Cavern. In the main Dragon Vein channel, the concentration of essence and law suppresses his Pure Daoist Qi so strongly that his lightning arcs collapse 261 269.
Swordsmanship
- Combines graceful close-range swordplay with the destructive force of Thunder Arts 156 158.
- Cuts through Ghost Clan ranks immediately after lightning strikes, using each turn of his blade to kill a Ghost Creature 158.
- Integrates ranged lightning and melee swordsmanship into a well-rounded offensive and defensive style 156 158.
Talismans and Lesser Professions
- Commands methods from more than a dozen lesser Professions, including talismans, formations, and swordsmanship 156.
- Draws a glowing rune in the air with two fingers while intervening to calm Zhang Yunqing’s uncontrolled military pressure 237.
- Uses lightning talismans as a substantial part of the group’s protection during the Azure Dragon Cavern expedition 261.
Feng Shui and Ritual Footwork

- Secretly studies Qin Zhong’s great-grandmother’s grave and identifies its forbidden Death’s Extremity Gives Birth layout 277.
Forbidden Death-Substitute Arts
- Uses a forbidden Taiyin Substitute Death Talisman to seal his life force and assume a corpse disguise in the Netherworld 276 277.
- Suffers severe backlash after removing the talisman, including black blood, chilling death energy, and dangerous weakness 276 277.
- Limit: Prolonged use in an extreme-yin environment risks freezing and cracking the soul. Li Xiang’s treatment is necessary to stabilize him 277.
Daoist Knowledge and Instruction
- Recognizes signs of Daoist affinity and an emerging inner world in Li Xiang 153 173.
- Has studied the old scrolls in Maoshan’s Founders’ Hall, including records of Dragon Veins, the Azure Dragon Soul, and Taiji Unification 267 269 270.
