Background and History

Jiang Lin is an Earth reader of Pirate King. While grieving Ace’s death in the manga, he is struck by a vehicle and wakes on Sabaody Archipelago with the Devil Fruit Infinite Copy System. He bluffs Kizaru long enough to copy the Admiral’s light power, then seeks out Luffy. After Jiang Lin helps defeat a Pacifista, Luffy invites him into the Straw Hat Pirates 1 2.

Kuma sends Jiang Lin to Amazon Lily during the Straw Hats’ confrontation on Sabaody. There, Jiang Lin challenges Boa Hancock to copy her fruit. When he learns Ace will be executed, he enters Impel Down with Luffy and Hancock, gathering powers while trying to reach Ace. He catches up to Ace’s escort, but Ace refuses his offer to escape and asks him to look after Luffy 4 5 6 8 17 20.

Jiang Lin helps the prisoners leave Impel Down and seize a Marine warship. At Marineford, he copies Marco’s and Whitebeard’s powers as part of his attempt to save Ace, publicly rejects Sengoku’s offer of an Admiral position, and fights several of the Marines’ strongest opponents 23 24 28 29 30 32 35.

During the battle, Jiang Lin invites Hancock to become the first member of a crew of his own. He promises to protect Amazon Lily and help her confront the Celestial Dragons tied to her past; she accepts. Jiang Lin tells Luffy that he and Hancock intend to keep traveling with the Straw Hats while his crew is still small 43 44.

Personality

Jiang Lin uses bluffing and calculated contact to obtain powers, but becomes direct when someone he cares about is threatened. Nami’s injury provokes an immediate attack on Kizaru, and he repeatedly puts himself between Luffy and stronger opponents during the attempt to save Ace 1 3 9 15 46.

He can be irreverent in a fight, yet respects conviction in an enemy: Magellan’s determination to defend Impel Down makes Jiang Lin acknowledge him as an opponent worthy of respect. Jiang Lin defines his own justice as protecting those he chooses and pursuing what he wants; he later declares his ambition to become Pirate King 4 11 13 35.

Devil Fruit Infinite Copy System

The Glint-Glint Fruit supplies Jiang Lin’s early speed and attacks, including Yata Mirror, Light-Speed Kick, laser beams, and Yasakani Sacred Jewel 1 2 3 21.
