Ch. 201Sky Island, the tragedy of Shandia, and Shandora
Key plot points and events
- Hades and Titan reach Sky Island’s Upper Yard in search of Shandora, the legendary City of Gold. Hades uses Observation Haki to locate it and detects Shandia warriors watching them.
- The Shandia attack is preempted: Hades and Titan kill the warriors they encounter, then wipe out the inhabitants of Hidden Cloud with poisonous mist and hunt down those away from the village. The Shandia are left extinct.
- Hades finds the hidden basin beneath the Island Cloud and opens a hole through it, revealing the land below. He and Titan descend into Shandora’s ruins.
- They reach the city’s center and discover a largely preserved metropolis adorned with vast quantities of gold, including gold paving the central road. The chapter ends with them surveying its immense wealth.
Character developments
- Hades is calculating and ruthless. He values the gold and Golden Bell above the Shandia’s history or survival, and decides to eliminate them to prevent pursuit or news of his discovery spreading.
- Titan acts as Hades’s trusted partner, assisting in the slaughter and sharing his astonishment at Shandora’s riches.
- The Shandia are introduced as a people fighting a centuries-long struggle to reclaim their ancestral home and ring the Golden Bell. Their history and devotion make their destruction especially tragic.
Significant themes
- Greed and conquest: Shandora’s wealth draws Hades to claim it, while the Shandia’s homeland and sacred treasure mean nothing to him.
- The cost of indifference: Hades treats the Shandia’s cause as an obstacle, showing how easily power can erase a people’s history and beliefs.
- Buried history and discovery: The City of Gold has remained hidden beneath the clouds for centuries, preserving evidence of the Shandia’s past.
Character interactions
- Hades and Titan coordinate with little discussion: Hades identifies targets and gives directions, while Titan carries out the attacks.
- The Shandia regard the newcomers as enemies, but they never get the chance to negotiate or explain themselves.
- At the city’s heart, Hades and Titan share a moment of awe at the scale of Shandora’s gold.
