Ch. 81Meeting and Targets
Plot points and events
- Hades begins training his followers intensively, knowing a Rocks Pirates counterattack is approaching and there is little time to prepare.
- During the three-day celebration, he recruits four newcomers: Wallybel, a young Mink; Seamus, a young Fish-Man; Porcupine Barkley, a Zoan Devil Fruit user; and Cobra Worthy, another Zoan user. Hades sees both their potential and the value of their connections and backgrounds.
- A week after the banquet begins, Hachinosu’s mood turns tense as the Rocks Pirates summon their forces and the Marines deploy agents to learn their plans.
- At a council meeting, Rocks D. Zebek reveals a detailed map marking eleven World Government member states as targets across the New World, Paradise, and the Four Seas. The planned campaign is on a massive scale.
Character developments and interactions
- Hades distinguishes himself through decisive recruitment, acting before other officers—many of whom wait for promising pirates to approach them. He recognizes that young recruits may later gain strength, confidence, or powerful Devil Fruits and become harder to recruit.
- Wallybel and Seamus, both very young and relatively inexperienced, are delighted and relieved to be recruited. As members of marginalized races, they have faced some rejection and see Hades’s invitation as a rare opportunity for protection and advancement.
- Barkley and Worthy are stronger, established bounty-holders and Devil Fruit users. They accept Hades’s offer readily, respecting the honor of being personally recruited by someone far beyond their level.
- At the meeting, Hades remains relatively inconspicuous among the Rocks Pirates’ leading figures, with Karthus nearby. He exchanges looks with other members while waiting for Rocks to present the plan.
Significant themes
- Preparation and survival: Hades pushes his group to grow stronger before the coming conflict.
- Timing and leadership: Recruiting early can secure loyalty before potential followers become powerful and selective.
- Belonging and opportunity: Hades’s recruitment gives vulnerable young Minks and Fish-Men a place within the crew.
- Power, wealth, and strategy: The Rocks Pirates target wealthy member states rather than Marine bases, using the lure of plunder to unite pirates’ self-interest and ensure they fight fiercely.
- Order beneath chaos: Despite their unruly reputation, the Rocks Pirates rely on intelligence, planning, and coordinated organization to challenge the Marines.
