Ch. 1161A brutal war
Key plot points and events
- The war has become a grinding, nonstop slaughter. Losses among mid- and high-ranking fighters are severe, and entire pirate crews have been wiped out.
- The Superpowers’ targeted attacks on the World Government, Celestial Dragons, and their allies have shifted local battles in the pirates’ favor, though they have also increased casualties on both sides.
- The World Government counters by concentrating reinforcements against prominent pirates. Shiryu is targeted twice by a powerful Celestial Dragon fighter and supporting experts, but Lafitte intervenes and helps save him.
- Both factions pursue breakthroughs by eliminating strong opponents. Fighters rotate between the front and rear to recover, while relentless combat pushes survivors to improve and awaken Haki.
- The Superpowers covertly eliminate Holy Knight Candidates scattered among pirate crews. They remain on the battlefield after completing their mission to avoid drawing suspicion.
- Teach fights two opponents, while the Black Emperor Pirates perform strongly. Liszt supports the pirate forces from the rear with music that heals and restores morale.
Character developments and interactions
- Shiryu and Lafitte develop mutual trust after repeatedly helping one another. Shiryu appreciates Lafitte and the Black Emperor Pirates; Lafitte looks out for him as a possible future recruit.
- Teach is presented as a formidable leader whose performance inspires his crew. He sees Shiryu as someone he may be able to recruit if the Flying Pirates fall.
- Liszt proves to be a vital noncombatant: his Musical Domain speeds physical recovery and eases mental strain, while his music also strengthens fighting spirit. Because he is vulnerable to attack, he stays in a guarded musical fortress with Hallorant.
- Charlotte Linlin could provide similar support but refuses to spend souls, highlighting her different priorities and outlook.
Significant themes
- War’s indiscriminate cost: ordinary fighters and entire crews are sacrificed, often without their deaths even being counted.
- Relentless pressure and growth: continuous fighting exhausts people but also pushes survivors to their limits and helps them develop.
- Strategy and cooperation: focused attacks, mutual protection, and logistical support can matter as much as individual strength.
- Hidden agendas and shifting loyalties: the Superpowers conceal their coordination, while Shiryu’s ties to the Flying Pirates may eventually give way to an alliance with Teach.
