Background / History
Early life and career
Han Ji reached the Advanced Level at twenty-one and the Super Level at twenty-eight. Believing himself invincible, he roamed the world and pursued both respectable and reckless adventures. After nearly dying, he became more restrained and accepted a government job 167.
As honorary dean of Ancient Capital Academy, he rarely involved himself in its everyday affairs. Dean Xiao’s report about Zhou Sining’s actions against the Black Vatican brought the student to his attention, and Zhou’s file reached his desk within three days. Han Ji admired his ability, diligence, and willingness to act despite his poor background 80.
Protecting Zhou Sining
Han Ji supplied a soul that Zhou used in preparing the Flame Demon Tiger’s advancement. He also approved Zhou’s participation in the exchange students’ field-training expedition, securing permission for him to flee first if danger arose 86 110.
After Lu Nian’s attack left Zhou unconscious, Han Ji examined his body, soul, and mental world. Finding no detectable injury, he initially attributed the condition to an Inner Demon and believed Zhou would have to overcome it himself. Feeling responsible for allowing him to join the expedition, Han Ji placed him under the Association’s care and demanded answers from the institutions involved. Zhou ultimately received his promised thirty million and another twenty million in compensation 110.
Mu Nujiao later persuaded Han Ji to attempt another examination. This time, he deliberately continued supplying Healing magic after Burning Heaven began absorbing it. The enormous infusion repaid the blade’s energy debt and allowed Zhou to awaken. During the process, Han Ji witnessed a devastated, magma-split world and countless vacant eyes, leaving him deeply concerned about the weapon 113.
When Zhou explained the blade’s sentience and soul contract, Han Ji compared its energy debt to the Demon Element’s dangerous costs. He agreed to investigate an energy-storage vessel and arranged Zhou’s Advanced-level awakening, through which Zhou gained the Space Element 115.
Following Zhou’s intervention in Hangzhou and killing of Luo Mian, Han Ji again supplied the energy needed to revive him. He reprimanded Zhou for exposing Burning Heaven, supported the official account attributing Luo Mian’s death to the Totem Black Snake, and obtained a special ten-million bonus for him 122 123.
Ancient Capital Cataclysm
Han Ji helped formulate the Ancient Capital’s hidden-threat strategy. While encouraging Zhou’s National Team prospects, he also asked whether Burning Heaven could kill a Monarch-level creature and authorized fifteen days of Wild Goose Pagoda training 122 132 133.
Zhou’s rescue of Zhang Xiaohou brought the Black Vatican conspiracy directly to Han Ji. He identified and destroyed the Forget Worm responsible for Zhang’s memory loss, then heard his account of Mu He’s involvement and the planned attack on the city. Han Ji placed Zhang and He Yu under guard when Zhou raised the possibility that the Ancient King was awakening inside Sha Yuan 144 145 146.
Han Ji coordinated Mu He’s arrest and trusted Zhou’s identification of Ling Xi as Salang’s disguise despite Zhu Meng’s objections. He ordered Imperial Mages to locate her and use Soul Imprisonment, and dispatched another squad to obtain village spring water that might counteract the Fountain of Rage. The investigation instead found the real Ling Xi dead and Salang gone 148 150 151.
As the crisis escalated, Han Ji ordered evacuation preparations and kept the plan to kill the Ghost Tyrant in place. When rain and the attack prevented air travel, he sheltered the young mages beneath the Bell Tower. He subsequently approved Fang Gu and Zhang Xiaohou’s attempt to enter Sha Yuan through their possible connection to the Ancient King’s descendants 151 152 155.
During Zhou’s demonized battle, Han Ji ordered the other defenders back to the Inner City, explained Zhou’s use of Blood Lizi, and later requested magic stones and Spirit Essences. When Zhou finally collapsed, Han Ji raced toward him; Zhan Kong reached him first and handed his apparently lifeless body over 158 162 165.
Recovery and public recognition
After Zhou showed signs of life, Han Ji organized discussions about concealing his Demon Element and Burning Heaven to prevent exploitation. He also sought a reward beyond money: accompanied by Zhu Meng, Du Xiao, and Demon Man, he visited the Mu Clan to propose a marriage between Zhou and Mu Nujiao. Their backing persuaded Mu Shan to give his daughter control over her marriage 165 166 167.
Han Ji remained closely involved in Zhou’s recovery and National Team journey. After Lu Yilin’s death, he arrived personally, reprimanded Zhou for endangering his injured soul, and promised to hold the Lu Family accountable. He nevertheless recognized that Zhou’s punishment had to remain a separate formal matter 253 254.
During the World Academy Competition, learning that Burning Heaven had taken human form and reached the Ancient King’s level left Han Ji visibly shaken. Later, he obtained Shao Zheng’s permission to announce the truth about the Ancient Capital Cataclysm during the semifinals, more than a year after the disaster 361 378.
Appearance
- Clothing: Wears an impeccably pressed Zhongshan suit at his first meeting with Zhou 80.
- Apparent age: Looks considerably younger than Dean Xiao, appearing to be in his fifties despite later being identified as over sixty 80 254.
- Expression: His slight smile gives him the appearance of an approachable older gentleman 80.
Personality
Han Ji is especially protective of students whose courage and character earn his respect. He considers Zhou’s care a matter of both institutional duty and personal decency, and refuses to abandon him after the disastrous expedition. His support extends to compensation, cultivation opportunities, medical treatment, and defending Zhou against powerful families 110 133 254.
His warmth often appears through teasing. He jokes about Zhou and Mu Nujiao’s relationship, welcomes Zhou’s unceremonious behavior in his office, and advises Mu Nujiao using stories from his own adventurous youth. He believes travel and experience can help young people discover what they want from life 113 115 167.
That affection does not prevent stern reprimands. Han Ji repeatedly warns Zhou against exposing Burning Heaven or damaging his health, and becomes furious when those warnings are ignored. Even while defending him over Lu Yilin’s actions, he distinguishes personal protection from the National Team’s disciplinary process 122 253 254 301.
