Background / History

Burning Heaven’s description says it was forged from countless Flame Spirits and that countless souls dwell within it. Nan Jue’s later study of its inscriptions suggests an early Totem-era origin and, more tentatively, that multiple Totem Beasts were used to forge it. Her account remains a theory, not a confirmed history 78 356 357.

Zhou Sining purchases the dormant blade through the System Shop. It first intervenes publicly when his uncontrolled flames fill a Tribunal holding room: Burning Heaven absorbs both the flames and an officer’s Thunderbolt. It later saves Zhou from Lu Nian’s near-fatal attack by sheltering his life crystal within its Subspace. Zhou cannot wake until Burning Heaven recovers the magic energy spent on the rescue 18 77 111 113.

During the Ancient Capital Cataclysm, Zhou sends the blade with Zhang Xiaohou to the Imperial Mausoleum. Burning Heaven absorbs the otherwise indestructible Eternal Demonic Lotus, opening the route onward. Zhou subsequently wields its Third Form against six Undead Monarchs, but a Chaos Hole swallows the entire strike. The exertion leaves the blade dormant again 160 164 191.

In Venice, Zhou feeds Burning Heaven an Emperor-level Spirit Essence to awaken it fully. It takes human form and accompanies him to the Dragon Tooth Arena, where Zhou tries to keep its identity and appetite concealed 357 358 360 361.

Appearance

Burning Heaven appears as a black, basalt-like sheathed Tang sword with fine ancient characters carved across its uneven surface. When active, crimson markings glow through it and a black-and-red eye opens near the hilt 160 191 358.

• Early spirit form — A featureless, red humanoid figure seen within the blade’s Subspace 111 153.
• Fully awakened human form — A striking young man in ancient robes, with long black-and-red hair, a golden sword mark on his forehead, and mismatched eyes: one black and one red, with different pupil shapes 358 360.
• Unsettling feeding form — Can split its face into five fleshy petals to consume a steel ball 359.

Personality

Burning Heaven is proud, teasing, and easily pleased by flattery or food. It complains when Zhou neglects to feed it, yet repeatedly protects him; their soul contract means his death would severely weaken it. Fully awakened, it is curious about modern society but does not accept that Zhou can force it to obey 111 153 359 360.

Its view of humans is distinctly nonhuman. It calls itself a Demon Beast, questions why humans consider themselves separate from other species, and treats concentrated magical energy—including valuable Soul Seeds—as food 359 360 362.

Energy Absorption

Burning Heaven feeds on magic energy of many kinds and can absorb incoming energy-based attacks 111 247 357.

• Absorbs Zhou’s uncontrolled fire, an officer’s lightning, water arrows, and the Eternal Demonic Lotus 77 160 247.
• Finds energy especially satisfying when it is abundant, orderly, and pure in attribute 362.
• Cannot absorb macroscopic physical attacks in the same way; Zhou identifies these as outside its energy-absorption ability 357.

Soul Contract and Protection

Burning Heaven and Zhou are linked by a soul contract. At its Compatibility Stage, Burning Heaven automatically takes fatal blows meant for him 111 359.

• Can preserve Zhou’s life crystal inside its Subspace while his body remains unconscious 111.
• A rescue can consume so much power that Zhou remains unconscious until sufficient magic energy is supplied 111 113.
• Zhou’s death would severely weaken Burning Heaven; conversely, Zhou cannot compel the fully awakened blade to obey him 111 359.

Weapon Forms

• First Form: Judgment — Zhou uses a strengthened flame strike under this name against fleeing Blue Valley Fierce Beasts; that instance is not the form’s true technique 248.
• Third Form: Destruction — Draws surrounding fire clouds into the blade and releases a vast beam of white flame. Zhou fears the force has grown beyond his control; a Chaos Hole absorbs the ten-second strike against the Undead Monarchs 164.
• Drawn blade — Can impose a terrifying vision of an apocalyptic wasteland on a target 252 345.

Independent Action and Communication

• Moves without a wielder, including following Zhang Xiaohou after he leaves it behind 160.
• Can take spirit and human forms, and can sense Zhou’s thoughts through their contract 111 358.
• Can turn its spirit form into a bow to send Zhou’s spirit into the subconscious of a mage supplying magic energy, at a cost to both of them 112.

Limits

• Before its full awakening, Burning Heaven needs a host to release its power. Zhou’s body and soul limit how much he can withstand 153.
• Wielding it drains Zhou’s magic energy, then mental strength, and can ultimately endanger his body and soul 153 198.
• While partly restored, Zhou can hold the drawn blade for roughly ten minutes without using a skill; in an underwater battle, he restricts himself to three minutes to preserve energy for escape 191 247.

Relationships

• Zhou Sining — Soul-contracted host and wielder. Burning Heaven saves his life, while Zhou supplies the energy it needs; their partnership mixes dependence, bargaining, and arguments over control 111 153 359.
• Mu Nujiao — Helps Zhou contact the outside world by supplying magic energy during his coma; later meets Burning Heaven in human form at the arena 112 360.
• Zhang Xiaohou — Carries the sheathed blade into the Imperial Mausoleum under Zhou’s instructions. He avoids touching it directly after seeing its dangerous behavior 160.
• Nan Jue — Studies its inscriptions and proposes an unconfirmed Totem-era origin; she warns Zhou about his soul pact with it 356 357.
• Han Ji — Helps replenish Zhou’s energy after use of the blade and warns him about its cost. Learning that a fully awakened Burning Heaven has Emperor-level power leaves him alarmed 115 122 361 362.
