Ch. 61Chain Reaction
Chapter summary
- The Hyuga Clan openly backs the Uchiha: Hyuga Hiashi sends two branch-family Jonin to join the Konoha Military Police Force, making the alliance unmistakable. Several Main Family elders confront him for acting without their approval. Hiashi argues that the village leadership’s pursuit of Kekkei Genkai puts the Hyuga at risk as well as the Uchiha, and that standing together may deter the High Command and attract other clans. Though uneasy, the elders accept his reasoning.
- Hiashi prepares for retaliation: After the elders leave, Hiashi orders tighter security and tells his people to monitor the Anbu, alerting the Uchiha if they notice anything suspicious. Alone, he wonders whether he has chosen wisely.
- The Ino-Shika-Cho clans assess the crisis: Shikaku meets with Inoichi and Choza, who confirm the Hyuga-Uchiha alliance. Shikaku judges that Konoha’s political crisis has already begun and may end in a major shift of power or civil war.
- Shikaku opts for cautious neutrality: He advises the Ino-Shika-Cho clans not to commit to either side yet. Instead, they will quietly signal approval of the Uchiha’s recruitment of civilians, maintaining goodwill without openly taking sides. Shikaku doubts the Third Hokage will remain in power much longer.
Character developments and interactions
Hiashi emerges as a decisive, strategic leader, willing to risk internal disagreement to protect his clan. The elders’ challenge reveals their fear of confronting Konoha’s powerful leadership, but Hiashi’s warning persuades them to follow his lead. Shikaku, meanwhile, favors patience and political flexibility; Inoichi questions whether neutrality is enough, while Choza asks how their clans should respond. Shikaku’s final remark suggests he sees the Hokage’s authority as close to ending.
