Power Progression

Background and History

Tang San meets Yang Xiu at Nuoding City Academy while training with Xiao Wu. He recognizes Yang Xiu’s clothing and cultural references from his former homeland. Yang Xiu offers him leadership of a Hidden Weapon Hall, where he could develop and spread his craft, and Tang San joins the Flame Emperor Sect. Xiao Wu joins with him 3.

Yang Xiu subsequently helps him strengthen his body and obtain an unusually old second Soul Ring. Tang San chooses the riskier of two Ghost Vines because he wants to grow strong enough to learn the truth about his parents. Guan Sheng later teaches him the Guan family’s Dragging-Blade Technique 7 12.

By the time he enters Shrek Academy, Tang San has reached level 40. Yang Xiu instructs him to conceal his third Soul Ring from outsiders. On a later training expedition, Tang San helps fight a Soul-Devouring Spider with his hidden weapons. Yang Xiu stops the beast when it prepares a dangerous counterattack; Tang San kills it and absorbs his fourth ring 22 23 26 27.

Martial Souls and Soul Skills

• Blue Silver Emperor / Blue Silver Grass — Yang Xiu’s status check identifies an unawakened Blue Silver Emperor, while Tang San publicly calls his Martial Soul Blue Silver Grass. He also possesses the Clear Sky Hammer 6 24.
• Entanglement and Parasitism — His demonstrated Blue Silver Grass techniques include Entanglement and his second skill, Parasitism. Parasitism draws out a living target’s fears and traps them in an illusion; at his level when acquired, it has little effect on much stronger targets and none on those without fear 7.
• Soul-Devouring Prison Array — His fourth skill has a defensive form that drains enemies’ Soul Power and spiritual power, weakens or stuns them, and uses the stolen energy to strengthen allies or the array. Its offensive form, Soul-Devouring Maw, attacks the soul directly and can cause permanent damage or leave spiritually weak targets vegetative. Tang San agrees to use it cautiously 27.

Hidden Weapons and Martial Arts

• Hidden weapons — Tang San uses them in combat, including to deliver the killing shot against the Soul-Devouring Spider 26.
• Dragging-Blade Technique — Guan Sheng teaches him the Guan family’s ancestral technique; Tang San reaches minor mastery during his training 12.

• Twenty-Four Moonlit Bridges — Used to store items, including the Martial Strength Pill and Sect uniforms 4 7 39.
• Eight Spider Lances — An External Soul Bone obtained from a Man Faced Demon Spider 15.
• Soul Ring Experience Pills — Obtains one thousand-year and one ten-thousand-year pill in the Sect Secret Realm under Yang Xiu’s instructions 15.
• Flame Emperor Sect uniform and badge — Keeps both after receiving them; later chooses the suit uniform over the Hanfu 23 39.

Relationships

• Yang Xiu — Sect master and older-brother figure who recruits, protects, and guides him while withholding family secrets until Tang San is stronger 3 7 23.
• Xiao Wu — Close companion who joins the Sect with him. Their teasing and mutual protectiveness continue at Shrek Academy 3 4 22 40.
• Tang Hao — His father, who watches over him from a distance and agrees to his place in the Flame Emperor Sect 5 8.
• Grandmaster — His teacher. Tang San respects him, though Yang Xiu’s evidence leads him to reconsider some of Grandmaster’s Martial Soul and Soul Ring theories 6 7.
• Guan Sheng — Martial arts instructor who teaches him the Dragging-Blade Technique and regards him as a disciple 12 29.
• Hong Tian — Treats Tang San as one of the younger members of his family and helps support him while he studies 22.
