In the command center, Hill's fingers stopped over the tactical table. She had been pulling up the global agent deployment map, but her hand froze in midair, like a paused frame.

She looked neither toward the windows nor toward the screens. Instead, she stared at the green markers on the holographic map before her as they went dark, one by one.

Those markers represented S.H.I.E.L.D.'s sites around the world, and the agents still operating there, who had yet to hear the news and were about to lose the organization they belonged to.

"This day..." Hill murmured, so quietly that only she could hear.

"Has it finally come?"

She withdrew her hand from the tactical table and clenched her fingers.

Through the screen, she could just make out that nightmarish figure.

His posture was as casual as if he were enjoying the breeze on his own balcony. Both hands were in his pockets, and his head was tilted slightly downward, as though he were surveying a colony of ants.
