Background / History

Jean teaches at Xavier’s Institute, where Professor X has contained her dangerous Phoenix power with a mental barrier. When Russell arrives with Rogue, Jean welcomes the frightened newcomer and helps her feel at ease among the school’s students 57.

Russell urges Jean to stop suppressing her power. Dark Phoenix begins to emerge, but Jean’s concern for her friends helps her resist long enough for Xavier to restore his barrier. Scott’s apparent death soon afterward triggers a fuller awakening, leaving Jean and Dark Phoenix in conflict over their identity and Xavier’s years of restraint 58 59 60 61.

Personality

Jean is gentle with vulnerable mutants: she approaches Rogue as an equal and helps calm frightened students at the Institute 57. Even during her first loss of control, she warns her friends away and redirects Scott’s optic blasts rather than letting them hit anyone 59.

Dark Phoenix is colder, more possessive, and willing to use devastating force. She resents Xavier’s suppression of her power and is drawn to Russell’s strength, though Jean remains capable of caution and restraint in later fights 61 81.
