Obito Uchiha still wore a smile as he listened, but there was no ignoring the chill in Pain's voice.
"Of course. I'll protect this village!" he said, his expression firm. "This was just an accident. Rogue ninja always have people after them. You know that."
Nagato didn't believe him, but the explanation was plausible. Unwilling to press further, he merely said, "It had better be," then turned and walked away.
Obito Uchiha watched Pain leave and clenched his teeth.

By the time dawn broke the next day, Uchiha Yin had only just lain down. With sunlight already streaming in, though, he could no longer sleep.
So he got up and walked around. Most importantly, he went to check on the ANBU. Things had gotten so intense at the Hokage Office the night before, yet none of them had noticed. They had grown far too lax.
