Background / History

Huang Qidao and Shen Qi shared a university dorm room. After graduation, Huang stayed at Beijing Sport University for graduate studies. When Shen came to the capital for an audition, Huang gave him his bed, borrowed a motorcycle to take him to the set, and waited until Shen secured the role 10.

Huang later became discouraged about his prospects after graduate school, particularly the difficulty of obtaining a university position. He began considering business instead and accompanied Shen to the Migrant Workers production, where he got to know the crew 26 27 29. The two then agreed to work together: Huang would finish his studies while gathering production information and maintaining contacts from the capital. Shen offered him a future partnership and a 500-yuan monthly allowance until graduation 31.

As Shen’s informal assistant, Huang researched talent agencies and industry news. He also found Shen an apartment near the university and spent some of his own money furnishing it 36 37.

Personality

Huang jokes readily with his former roommates, but takes Shen’s ambitions seriously. When Wei Jianguo laughs at Shen’s declaration that he will become a star, Huang objects 17. He is also protective, sometimes to a comic degree. Huang worries about harassment in the entertainment industry and insists on accompanying Shen to a nighttime meeting with a director. Later, concerned that an exhausting scene has left Shen too deep in character, he pretends to leave the production but remains nearby to watch over him 28 29 33.
