Background / History

Yin Zhiping is a Quanzhen disciple whose feelings for Little Dragon Maiden violate his order’s precept against lust. Zhao Zhijing discovers those feelings and threatens to expose him, provoking Yin to accuse Zhao of seeking his position as leading disciple 21.

Yin later assaults Little Dragon Maiden. He conceals the crime, fearing both a confrontation with her and damage to the Quanzhen Order’s reputation. He eventually confesses and dies shielding her from a sword. Shen Qi, the actor cast to portray him, interprets that final act as Yin’s first willingness to face the consequences—not as redemption for the assault 21.

Appearance

The original novel describes Yin Zhiping as having “long brows, handsome eyes, and refined features” 14.

• Adaptation look — Shen Qi portrays him in Daoist robes with a topknot; the production gives his costume and makeup an especially polished finish 45 46.

Swordsmanship

• Yin is given Quanzhen sword movements for the television adaptation. Shen Qi trains with the martial-arts team to perform them 37 38.
• He carries a sword when he and Zhao Zhijing encounter Yang Guo and Little Dragon Maiden practicing martial arts 46.

Relationships

• Little Dragon Maiden — The object of Yin’s infatuation and the victim of his assault. He later confesses and dies shielding her 21.
• Zhao Zhijing — A fellow Quanzhen disciple and rival who threatens to expose Yin’s feelings. Yin accuses him of coveting his position 21.
• Yang Guo — Encounters Yin and Zhao Zhijing while practicing with Little Dragon Maiden; after defeating Zhao, he makes both disciples swear to keep quiet 46.

Television Adaptation

• Shen Qi wins the role after an audition testing his acting, interpretation of Yin’s guilt, and swordsmanship 21 22 23.
• At Jin Yong’s request, the character is renamed Zhen Zhibing in the production’s script. His actions remain unchanged; the change addresses Daoist objections to the portrayal of Yin Zhiping 43.
• The adaptation reduces the character’s presence and depicts the assault more subtly. It also omits the novel’s detail that he had cut off two fingers 22 46.
• In a key night scene, Zhen Zhibing struggles with temptation while Little Dragon Maiden lies incapacitated. The set is cleared and the scene is filmed with restraint 50.
